:-) ..... :-(

Okay, just need a little advise. Going on a 10 day vacation where there will be much alcohol intake and loud carousing (sp), and outdoor activity (hiking, kayaking, ect..). Read...Alaska to see friends. I'm flying out there so won't be able to take much in way of training gear. My goal is to run a 5K this fall. Would you try and train while on vacation, or just go, have a good time, and resume training on return. I'm thinking that I might be able to squeeze in a couple of runs, but not as much as I have been doing. If I go for the resume training on return, I'm going to rely on ya'll to get me motivated into the gym once I get back. Any thoughts??

Good point. With the time difference (3 hours), I'll probably be up early anyways....running, mountains in alaska, early morning...sounds like heaven to me!

Sherolyn, I was in the same boat back in June.  Went to Montana.  Got in several runs. I think the combination of running significant hills and the altitude helped.

And like you said, it is gorgeous running.  Make sure and ask about the danger of any wild animals before you start though.

Have fun

Gary

i was in a similar situation this past July had a 2 week vacation, with only a week back before my second 10K of the season. I did manage to get in a couple runs the second week of the vacation and the run was just fine.. After almost 2 weeks off I was more than ready to go back to the gym, needed to work off all the food and booze that was consumed. Most importantly ENJOY your VACATION no matter what you decided to do...

Hi Sherolynn, I was in this situation just this week (got back on vacation on monday).

Bring your running shoes and try to get out...10 days is a long time to go without a workout and you'll find you miss it I bet. But don't let stress over fitting it in, or guilt over not being able to fit it in, ruin your vacation! Even if you take a 10 day break you are still way ahead of the average American!

And remember, even if you can only fit in 10 or 15 minutes, a short run is far superior to no run at all

Take your shoes.

When I went to Clearwater Beach, FL, I got up for some early morning runs. I'm not much of a morning exerciser but the heat there necessitated it. Anyway, one of my best memories from the beach was running over the bridge from Clearwater Beach to Sand Key as the sun was rising over the bay and sparkling on the waves. Everything was peaceful and it was a special solitary moment for me. Also, the 7 mile run I did seemed to go a lot faster since I was busy looking at new scenery.

Even so, be sure to check with locals or guides about any issues with wildlife up there!

Have fun!

Hi Whit, I grew up in Orlando and have spent some time in Clearwater.  You're right, that is one beautiful sight (off of the bridge)...

Same decision a few weeks ago. Those drinks go down sooooo much better if you've had a workout earlier in the day. IMHO!

Sheolynn - Run, run, run, whenever you can! Make it your life's quest to run as many different and exciting places as possible. Let me give you some for instances: when we were in New York, we ran in Central Park. Always wanted to do that, and now we have - several times! When we were in San Francisco, we ran the Golden Gate Bridge. What a trip!! Almost every place has some special spot where a runner can run and brag about it later. Find them and go run them! You'll have so much fun!
