Has anyone done these races before? Is there a big turn out? I really need to practice an OWS before may 12th and was thinking of doing the first one.
Is it worth the entry fee or should I just try to find a local lake myself?
Thanks, Sally

I did one last year between my open water freak out at the Timex and the Soma. I would say it is definitely worth doing if OWS experience is a concern, as it was (and still is) for me. There is a good turnout, it's a safe environment, and you also get the bonus of experience with OW surrounded by others and also with Tempe Town Lake, where most events are held. If you can make it work with your schedule, I highly recommend doing one (or more).

I think I did the same one as Brian last year, or maybe the one after in November. They are pretty good for just $25 and, like Brian says, you get to swim where you will race. If you are realy new to OWS and just want to practice then Butcher Jones Cove at Saguaro lake is better. You can walk out until it's chest deep or so and just swim 150 - 200m laps in water where you can always stand up. When Tanya and I swim there we go out a bit further and swim around bouys but when I swim alone that's what I do. It's great because you are never more than 10 strokes away from being able to stand up.

Hey, I did several S&D's when I was just getting my feet wet (haha) with tri stuff. Definitely do 1 or 2! They are fun!

Anyone doing the S&D this Saturday?  I need an OWS practice and was thinking of signing up. (750 swim and 4k run.)

I'm seriously thinking about it. I would have to be back over the west side for my son's 10.30 baseball game but I think I can do it.
I'll let you know

As fast as you are, Sally, you'll probably be on your way to the game by 7:15!!

Ha Ha, if I survive the swim it's going to take me at least 20 minutes to get out of my wetsuit

Hey Sally, they are fun races and give good experience with OWS with some battering going on. It is a good experience and will only make you better.

Hi Sally! My husband and I are thinking of maybe doing it too for the exact same reason as you (to get the OWS experience). We did go out to BJC once last week but would like the race experience and the whole crazy "get out of the wetsuit" FAST deal! HA! I will keep you posted. Would be fun to meet up!
