I just got the CGI email today - did anyone from BT request a "tri club" area so we can all meet up?  I'm not sure if we qualify, since we're an internet group and not a true club practicing in person...but it would be nice to have a spot set up for pre- and post- gathering, and for our families to hang out and enjoy the park while we suffer race.

BTW, the race director said he'll set aside an area for the "beginner triathlete club" to meet up at the race.

great idea maxpixie!

Sweet!!  Thanks for making contact, Mary!

Now how do we find this area, and what fortifications should we bring?  I can have the hubby load up a wheelie cooler with some icy drinks and some snacks... sandwiches and the like...

Anybody know a masseuse who wants to camp out in the BT area?

(seriously.  no, really.  I'm starting to freak out.  I'll be DFL in the Oly, so said masseuse has to be willing to stay for the whole thing... and then some... they'll be picking up cones behind me, so I'll be easy to find... just look immediately in front of the sweep truck... *sigh)

Hey! No freaking out allowed!!! It'll be a great race. You're going to do better than you expect. Just keep plugging away at a consistent pace and you'll do fine. Positive thoughts!

What you should be focusing on is what excuse are you going to tell your husband to get him out of there when the masseuse shows up?

Um, I did the Olympic last year.  From what I saw, you won't be that close to DFL (maybe not a ton of finishers between you and them but I would expect a good chunk of time between you and them).  And I seem to recall running a 10K with you - you do roughly that time (the course was basically flat) you'll be fine.  I'm sure some will have mountain bikes, so you'll be fine on the bike.  And you can swim, right?  So you'll be fine.

And just remember, you'll probably be home and showered before I finish the bike leg up at Ironman Lake Placid that day.

DFL > DNF> DNS.  I came pretty close to DFL in last year's OLY.  I will still be BOP this year because it took me so long to get into training this year.  It's all fine.  I will finish this year, keep on training and do better next year.  2 years ago I couldn't have thought of even attempting it.  I will see you there.  I will also be at the Long branch race July 1st.

Anyone know anything about the lake temperature for this race? I know that last year it was very warm, but what's it looking like for this year? Same thing? Cooler? Any chance it's actually cold?

I don't own a swimming wetsuit, just wondering if I should be thinking about getting one for this race.

Thanks!

I wouldn't bother. Last year we got rain the night before which brough the water down to 83 and change but I would say that it's more than a 50% chance it's not wetsuit legal.

No more chatter about the race?  What, is everyone too busy training?

Less than two weeks, I'm getting psyched!

Heading up to Lake Placid this coming weekend. Gonna ride the Ironman course (just one loop). Hopefully it'll translate into speed on the flat NJ course.

Are we going to have a meeting up point?

BTW, I'm working the registration tables on Saturday, so look me up.

BT is supposed to be sending me a banner to mark the meetup area we requested for our "tri club" - AKA - this gang of BTers who are doing the NJ State

Its supposed to get here Thursday before the race.

Other than that? dunno.

Hey gang! Just did the bike and run courses yesterday in the heat and they are both different from last year's race...so take a look at the race maps if you did it last year. I think the bike is only slightly more difficult this year with some wacky turnarounds and a little more gentle uphill stuff than last year. The new run course is much better although a little more hilly (not really hills, more like bumps), but way more shade and on the paths in the park.

The swim starts from a different point this year too, but looks to be a good (and possibly accurate) distance.

Looks like it will be a fun time like last year. All I am hoping is to be a little bit faster at each discipline.

See you all there! Maybe we could meet up on Saturday at packet pickup! GO BTrs!

Accurate would be nice! I swam faster in a half Ironman than what I did in this so-called "Olympic" distance swim last year.

  • ..with some wacky turnarounds.

I saw the course map and that was my first reaction - might be some tight turnarounds.

    Thanks for the update.

We had to get a one loop course for this year. First of all I think one loop is just better (less crowded...I really like some of the roads that were added, especially Conover and the college road). Secondly there is construction on Quakerbridge Rd and for us to do two loops would have been an issue. The county is making huge accomodations for us to have a lane on that road (last year there were two lanes in each direction...today there was only one in each direction...and they are giving one of the two to us!). Still we didn't press for the one loop course because of the construction...we just think it's a better alternative.

I rode the turnarounds about a dozen times each. The first one I can take fairly comfortably at 22mph (you have to be at the correct turnaround...if you go to the one farther up it's tighter). also, if you are practicing it you need to watch out for cars! I had someone wait on the road to tell me if it was safe.

The second one is at the college and it's literally a circle...it's a little tight coming out of it but I can take it comfortably at 20+. The lst one is the tightest and I did it comfortably at 18mph. Now I obviously wasn't out there with 1800 other bikes but we will have plenty of signs and volunteers, the streets will be swept and I marked all the potholes today and they are working to get them filled.

The run should offer much more shade and it will be a standing, in water, beach start...so those who spent most of their energy treading water last year will have a little extra in their tank this year.

    12 days left!!!

There are going to be hills on the bike and run??  Larry you told me it was flat.

Hills? We don't need no stinkin' hills!

I mapped the bike leg using the route tracker on this site, and the vertical elevation shows only about 50 feet from lowest point to highest point. I'm hoping that's right, as that seems pretty darn flat.

This event will be my first tri. Hopefully I'll get out of the water in a reasonable time, won't have a flat on the bike, and will lumber along on the run. It's all about the finish line, just getting to it.
