I am 38 and I hope to do a sprint in June 05.

I was never athletic, but a couple of years ago someone gave me a weight bench and I started lifting weights. I lost 30lbs doing that.

Then my 12-year-old wanted to run cross-country track and asked if I would run with her during the summer. I really enjoyed the Father / Daughter thing.

One day in June while riding the Motorcycle I saw a flyer for a local triathlon. It stayed in the back of my mind. Somehow during the summer I went from helping my daughter, to making my own training plans to do this Tri the next summer.

I plan to keep running and biking the rest of the fall and lifting weights all winter. Next spring I will switch back to more cardio.

Also, I plan to do this on the cheap. I have a $70.00 mountain bike and running shoes I bought off the clearance rack.

To give myself a small test, My daughter, Wife and I will run a Marine 5k Mud Run on September 25th. If that goes well, I will shoot for the Tri!!

Sorry this is so long, but I don't have many people to talk to about this, I am kind of a closet exerciser. My friends and family already think the weight lifting is outrageous. I can't bring myself to even start explaining why I want to do a triathlon!!

Welcome to the site.  Don't have to explain this weird tri feeling to us.  We're all in the same mind set.

Plus you are setting an excellent example for your daughter.

Hey Motobk,

I would run with my daughters but they would beat me.

I also like the idea of doing tri's on the cheap.

Just be consistent with your training and you will win, in all the the important ways.

Welcome to the madness! I mean, the party!

As a fellow mountain bike triathlete, you're soooo doing it right, IMO. But, I wager you'll be looking at new bikes at the end of next year. If for no other reason than to dream.

Just remember to invest in some good-fitting running shoes. Everything else you can just "make do".

I wish you all the very very BEST!

I came to this sport in an odd way - after gaining 22kgs with my first baby, I was desperate to lose some weight and get fit... a friend of a friend suggested triathlon, I thought she was CRAZY because I couldn't swim 2 laps of the pool without feeling like I was going to die. Anyway to cut a very long story short, I said YES to her because I am the sort of person who loves a challenge and man did I get one!!!

I must say though, I have NEVER been more proud of myself than when I crossed the finish line. I smiled for the rest of the year!!!

Keep going - I am inspired by your story!

Welcome Welcome!!

As for the Cheap. I did my first tri in July on a Raleigh that I got for $15 at a Yard Sale. Put $30 into it on Cables and a Tire. Good luck!

Welcom and good luck!

The mountain bike will serve you well (for now!) but don't scrimp on your running shoes. Go to a legitimate running shoe store, get the appropriate shoe for your foot strike, and change them every 300-500 miles.
