Wow, this site has some much useful info.

I didn't think of training for tri until I stumbled onto this site. I was just googling for opinions on goggles (mine are leaky), then I started reading up more on how the average person can become a triathlete. Then the light bulb went off, and I'm thinking "Yeah, I can do this (the sprint triathlons, that is)."

I'm training to run the L.A. marathon in March 2005. I've also been teaching myself to swim. I got the TI book & video. I'm making progress on both. I don't own a bike now, but when I get better with swimming and running then I can justify the expense of a tri bike. In the meantime, I'm going to go for the spin classes at the gym.

Googling for goggles??????? lol

Hey, welcome to the site and good luck with your training.

Sounds like you've got a good start.  I think the TI stuff is great.  Obviously, the bike is the single largest expense for this sport (excluding the Hummer 2 to attach your bike rack to) and it might be a good idea to wait a bit to see everything thats out there and how you really like the sport.  In hind sight, I wish I'd waited to purchase, but then again its hard to get past that instant gratification thing.

Hi JC,

Triathlon training is really good for all around fitness.  If you start developing little aches and pains from the marathon training, you will have the swimming and biking to take the load off your legs.

Keep it up.

Hey, welcome aboard. And, I suppose that if you were "googling for goggles" you must into swimming, which, to me, and many other newbie triathletes, is the most difficult part of training. And, you are training for a marathon so your running must be fairly good. As for cycling, that is a piece of cake; all you need now is a bike. You needn't be too alarmed if you don't have a bike and do not have the financial resources to buy a top of the line elite tri bike. Any old bike you can lay your hands on that fits, has a good seat and rolls, will be good enough to train with.

You can rent a tri bike from Nytro in Encinitas so that would make your initial costs less.
