Subject: effect of swimming in warmer water
One day when I was swimming at the gym, one of the other swimmers told me that swimming in warmer water can wear you down alot faster than swimming in cooler water. That day the temp. of the water was 92F. Is this true? I do find myself becoming out of breath rather quickly in the gym pool, which is an outdoor heated one. Could it be the temperature of the water that's doing it, or is it just me? I've been training since last September.

If you were running in hot weather you'd get tired a lot faster too. But water can effect how warm/cool you are faster than air can. Your body has to work harder to stay cool.

92 is some really hot water to be swimming in...

physiologically the water temp will afftect your performance. Water is a more effective coductor of heat, too. 50 degree water will freeze you faster than 50 degree air. That being said I do't know how warm the water need to be to make you feel tired, but I have had sluggish feeling workouts in a too warm pool. Didn't get breathless though. I had the effect of getting all sleepy like in a bath.

If the water in my pool hovered around 90, I WOULD NOT be swimming there. Swimming in warm water sucks and wears you out very quickly. Personally, I find it to be much worse than running or riding in hot and humid temps.

I hate swimming in any pool that is over 80 degrees.  Warm water just wears me out faster, at least that is how I feel.  Last Tuesday I swam at my local YMCA where the temp was 84 degrees and that was way too warm for me.  In contrast when I don't swim at the Y I use the aquatic center at the local community college that is down the street from my office.  The water in their competition pool is usually around 77 degrees, which I find perfect.  I can't imagine swimming in 92 degree water.
