Hey I'm a bit lazy but then I was down the shops and I saw this thing on the notice board for the Vikings Tri Club Novice program. So I thought hey that sounds like fun. So now here I am training and I really enjoy swimming. I hate running and I'm not sure about biking because I haven't got myself a bike yet. Any way so yesterday I noticed this Sri Chinmoy Self Transcendence National Capital Swim. It's 9.3km. And I just can't stop fantasising about doing it solo. I have started asking around to try and put together a relay team but man I just want to do it by myself. I just figure I should probably do it in a relay team first to test the water so to speak. It's about 2 months away. Do you think I might be able to make it from couch potato to 9.3km open water swim in that time? I know I can be a part of a relay team and I'm going in this damn race one way or other but can I go it alone?

Regards
Dale.

PS. This is the URL to the swim if your interested.

Well, yes, you are crazy in my book! But that doesn't mean you should not try it! If you have good cardio health, and are a strong swimmer, and you do some serious training, you may be able to make it. It sounds like an awesome achievement. I would try to find someone who did it last year and learn from them. Will you wear a wetsuit? Even though the water is warm there (I have actually been there!), you lose a lot of body heat in the water. If you can't make it, you have a support boat with you to help out.

In longer events, there is a lot of psychological stress: highs and lows. Just be prepared for those lows - you may feel panicky or feel like dropping out. Figure out some strategies to help you get through those times. Promises of chocolate always works for me!!

Go for it!

so thats about a 6mile swim right?  thats a tall order...if your still new and truly 'from the couch' - go it relay style with aspirations to do it solo next year.  that would be a 3hour hour plus swim for a decent swimmer (i think.)

but then i dont know your swimming particulars and where u are at now.  whatever you decision, kick some butt.

well, if your crazy, then i'm a nutjob.  and so is everyone else here.  don't worry about it.  just get yourself prepared.  you can do whatever you want, when you set your mind to it.  so get out there and swim!  and i agree... the swim is the best part of the tri

WOOW! You said everything with that sentence! The call is obvious. Just make sure to turn your dream to goal. I mean, specific steps, training plan, coach, diet, suit and everything. I am so anxcious to hear from you. I can't wait another 2 months to your race report, drop a note now and then, please, pleeeease?!
Oh, distance swimming, my only true love! thanks you for reminding me. Yout post is sooo inspiring! I am so uplifted, so moved! Thank you!! What a happy and wonderful "crazyness"!

Our distance swimmer Veljko Rogosic just swam La Manche a month ago. 43km b/c of the current, 11:27hrs. All night long. 11 degrees C, big wawes. As oldest one who did it without the suit. He is 63.

I would say, live now not for the next year, whatever it means to YOU! When the time comes, you will see. But I think you already decided. :-)
That race is spiritual experience, anyway. Only crossing the borders we have chance to realise they do not exist.

My junior year in high school i did a 5k swim off of very little training. I was a strong runner but did VERY little swimming at the time. My sister, who is a strong swimmer, was doing one, so since she is my younger sister, I told her i could beat her (completely joking around of course). So my mom told me I wouldn't even be able to finish. That's all it took for me to try. I did no formal training whatsoever and almost didn't make it. At the end, I had a kayak as my personal escort because he thought I wouldn't make it. I came in 1 hour AFTER my sister and almost dead last, but I finished.
The moral of the story (I think), is 1. Make sure you train for it, and 2. It's definitely possible
Good luck to you!
