most good running stores will have them.  Sportsbasement.com has 'em too.  I think I paid like $15 for mine...I love it.

http://www.nefitco.com/foam_rollers.html?source="google"&gclid=CLWTgJ7d6osCFQlQWAodMVLsVQ

If these other places have them, great, otherwise do what I did...google Foam roller IT band and many sites came up.  I linked one at random above.

I'd look for a new PT.
I paid $4 for a 4 inch by 18 inch foam roller from my PT.
Maybe print a picture from one of the web sites to show what you mean to the PT. I'd bet they got something similar.

You could also try other PT's

In her defense she is a trauma PT.  Working with getting the hubby in the shower, standing, sitting upright.  Not really sports related, she is great at what she does with him when she comes to the house so I'm not gonna get rid of her just yet.   I'll check out target and maybe just buy one online.  I already checked Dicks, no luck.

Thanks

My PT is definitly more a sports related place and dealing with those sorts of issues. It doesn't hurt to call around to see if you can find one local.

The foam does compress over time and I've had to buy a second one and at $4 is not too bad.

I also got mine at Target. I got the one with the DVD which is fairly useless (not really any new information, and pretty much just an advertisement for the manufacturer), and paid somewhere in the $20s if I remember right. I'm sure I could find a cheaper one online, but I needed it right then.

I got mine at Target. Wasn't happy to spend 20 bucks, but it came with a DVD that showed a model demonstatring the various exercises.

Been rolling for a few weeks now. It's a nice massage, but it hasn't done anything to resolve my IT Band issues. In fact, after a little run this weekend to gauge my status, I'd say it's as bad as it's ever been. Maybe I'm expecting results too soon, or maybe y regimen isn't complete.

MRI coming up next week to get a look inside the knee.

I bought mine from Performbetter.com.

Check out this link: http://www.performbetter.com/detail.aspx_Q_ID_E_4918_A_CategoryID_E_201

I'd also recommend looking into "The Stick" - I bought one recently and can't say enough good things about it.  It is helping to free up an area in the right side of my pelvis via use on the glutes/hams/outside of same leg.  It's a long story, but suffice it to say The Stick has helped free up what two solid months of rolfing (very intense form of massage), some chiropractic, and the foam roller from performbetter couldn't touch.  I'd literally resigned myself to just having to live with it and have been doing so for the past couple of years.  In a span of less than two months using The Stick, I'm feeling almost no pain in my right pelvic area when I run.  My only regret is not buying the thing sooner!!

I hate teh one from walmart. I am assuming you are talking about the giam one. It last me about 2 weeks. lucky for me I found a nice full size one from a local running store and I been using it for a couple of months. ITs totally awesome.

I am a big guy so many the other ones just are not ment for a guy like me. I would look around for something that is nice and stiff.

remember they suppose to hurt you .

Got mine form Target and love it. As mentioned before definitely need to increase you pain threshold. My girlfriend gets jealous watching me roll on this thing and moan very loud. :-)

Any info on how to use these things? My IT Band has been killing me lately and doesn't seem to be getting any better.

Never mind... I answered my own question.  Link

Since it's just a cylindrical hunk of foam, you could also see if there is a foam shop or factory nearby. That's where I got mine. You might save money that way, too, because the foam shop will admit that it's just a hunk of foam.

I bought mine at a store that specializes in running. But I paid way more than I should have. If you are in a hurry a running specialty store will have them, if not buy it online.

I've also been using one of these for two years now and it works like a charm. I think it was about five bucks. Make sure that the one you get is really firm and doesn't squish under your weight. Mine is short and fat and really firm.
