Like the topic says thought I'd introduce myself.

I used to do some fell running, normally about 8km. Then when I moved to a place with no hills I changed to road running. Maybe because I'm tall (6'5") or the years of running up hills I'm much better at the slower up and down running than the faster road races. So a little discouraged I stopped training.

After 8-9 months of inactivity I forced myself to start doing sport again and decided to try triathlon. I'm sure I'll find it tough too but I'm really enjoying the mix of training over all the repeative running I used to do and rather than trying to be competitive I'm just hoping to finish. :-)

Welcome John,

Triathlons are a good choice and it sounds like you are due for a change in sports directions.  Triathlon training is great for all around fitness.  If you can do triathlons, you can do anything.  For me, that is the point.

What is fell running?

'Fells' is a very English word, I guess we're the only ones to use it. Sorry didn't really think about it. It means hills, mountains, etc. So the idea of fell running is to run up hills :-)
I'm moved from the hilliest part of England (lake district) to the flatest (East Anglia) so can't really do it anymore.

I'm hoping my leg strength will help with the cycling. Swimming is a big problem. I nearly drowned 1st time out ... well I got cramp and had to pull myself out the pool.

Thanks for the explanation, John.  I guess fell running would be trail running in the US.

You will find lots of sympathy and support here in learning to swim for distance and speed.  Eventually, once you master the stroke, your 6'5" wingspan should be a big help.

Have fun.
