So I'm trying to decide on what I should wear for my first triathlon this summer. I can't afford a triathlon racing suit as of yet... So I was thinking about wearing just a jammer, and then throwing some running shorts on over it after my ride?

Does anybody have better ideas?

don't get a full suit, they cost about $100 but you ought to be able to find a closeout or clearance pair of tri shorts.  you DO NOT want to be riding any distance with only one layer of lycra from your jammers protecting the zone.

anyone seen any sales recently that we can steer this young man to?

Sierra Trading Post (www.sierratradingpost.com) often has good deals on workout gear. They've currently got a $60.00 pair of Zoot tri shorts for $35. It's usually closeout stuff, though, so colors and sizes are often limited.

check race expo's, too. There was a big $10 rack at one I went to in March, and I got DeSoto tri shorts for $10!!! Now if only I had a teeny top, could have had one of those for $10.

Join the Javelin Triathlon Team and you will get a very nice looking one piece or two piece tri suit for the cost of shipping, a mere $25.

Take a look at Performancebike.com. They usually have Tri shorts on sale at reasonable prices. Their sleeveless century jersey works pretty well for a top. They are usually on sale for under $20.00

Alright so are Triathlon shorts meant to be swam in also? I'm guessing yes, but I wouldn't know.

for the race, yes, the thinner chamois pad dries faster, still provides some comfort on the bike, and you don't notice it on the run.
for regular training, no. get some jammers, any one of the places above likely has some.

Trisports.com has some 2005 unisex tri shorts on closeout for about $20.  They're the ones I use.  I think most websites have closeout stuff, but this was an especially great deal.

If you're doing a sprint, you could do the entire race in jammers (I did my first two in swim trunks).  Just realize that jammers really aren't designed for cycling, so you might wear them out quickly riding the bike in them.

Most of my training gear consists of old T-shirts (mostly cotton, some dri-wick), cheap shorts, and whatever I find on clearance at W-Mart, TJ-Maxx, etc.  so I'm OK spending a little cash on race-day wear.

I just ordered two pair from here last week. You can't beat $20 for shorts.
