Extreme Veteran 330 Austin Texas | Subject: Balanced Training...I always revert back to running Ok, I have been an active BT'er for a little over a month and the info is great. I run my first tri this Saturday and I am really stoked. The question I have, or the observation I have is this. I go through other people's logs and see they are biking far more than they are running, or swimming so much longer than running. Do most triathletes focus less on running than on the other two. Should I focus more on my biking, I understand the concept of the bike being the longest portion of the event. Or, am I just getting wigged out over my training and everything is fine. Feel free to look through my logs and add any comments. That said, my training hours are limited due to family and work. |

Coach 9167 Stairway to Seven | Subject: RE: Balanced Training...I always revert back to running Are you training for a sprint? If so your volumes look fine as far as completing with a little bit of juice. Bear is absolutely right, btw. When I look at my AG placings by sport, I'm always highest in swim (front to middle of pack), next in bike (middle to back of pack) and worst in run (back of back of pack). So in theory I should be workingg on running the most. But I hate running, and actually gave it up last month. Since then I've been having great swim & bike workouts and both are improving more than they would have when I struggled with running I will just be entering relay, aquabike and pure bike & swim events. |

Master 2099 Madison, WI | Subject: RE: Balanced Training...I always revert back to running You have bike/swim events around you? I wish! We have plenty of swim/run and bike/run events. But, I don't know of any bike/swim events. I actually love running - it just doesn't love me so much. Slowly, slowly, I might be easing my way back into it. (I actually like biking least, but I'm trying to change that attitude now that I have a quality bike.Of course, I need to actually RIDE it more than once a week to change that attitude, eh?) |

Champion 6993 Chicago, Illinois | Subject: RE: Balanced Training...I always revert back to running Well running better than anything so always run more . I think people tend to do what they love and frankly only way that can complete hurt is if your trying to be competitve or if you do not do enough of each you just tank on that sport. If you are balance but put in extra into the run then nothing wrong with it unless you overtrain. My first love is running is I always fall back to it but I do alot more running races so that is why its my focus. |

Champion 19812 MA | Subject: RE: Balanced Training...I always revert back to running There are lots of things to consider in training and time spent in each sport. Look at my logs and it seems I'm very unbalanced....lots and lots of cycling, less running swimming. My issue is injuries with running so I have been held back to what I can d same with swimming I had a shoulder issue. I could ride so I did plus I love to ride. I place best on the bike normally first couple places, middle on the run, and back or it depends who shows up on the swim. So I should swim most, run second and ride the least. I'm doing some long rides, and doing a HIM later so I need my cycling to be strong. Plus running is most likely to cause injuries so I'll never do lots of it. I'm a 3x a week runner and don't run that much even with the 3x. Last 2 years my run times have dropped 2 m/m in my tris (granted I started out really slow) and this year I'm hoping for 1 m/m....so the training is working for me. Consider what distance folks are training for, if they have injury issues, and what their weaknesses are. Frankly most folks avoid their weakest sport as they don't like it as much. Look at the training plans for balance...it isn't necessarily time but workouts per week...in a normal build week for me I s/b/r each 3x a week and do srength twice. My swim and run 3 workouts take much less time than my bike ones...just nature of what I'm training for. Pick a plan that fits into your family & work life; pick a plan that works more on your weakest area and you'll be good...what others do isn't necessarily the best way to go. |

Love those HIMs where you don't need your swimming and running to be strong. I did one just last month. Wait, no, that was a relay. |

Love those HIMs where you don't need your swimming and running to be strong. I did one just last month. Wait, no, that was a relay. I attended a Joe Friel workshop last year and Friel's stated opinion was that triathlons were basically bike races with a swim and run tacked on before and after, particularly when you move up to HIM and IM distances. Makes sense when you look at the relative amount of time you spend on each leg - of course my plodding runs tend to challenge that theory. |

Expert 655 Muncie, IN | Subject: RE: Balanced Training...I always revert back to running I know this is bad but I'm a runner and always will be! I run more than the other two. Swimming is the weakest and I'm swimming more than I was but unfortunately my biking is suffering. However I seem to be able to 'wing it' more on the bike than the other two! I'm into Triathlon and excited about it but I know I'll perform much better in running races than triathlon but I'm good with that! I do what makes me happy! |

Extreme Veteran 475 Tampa, FL | Subject: RE: Balanced Training...I always revert back to running Biking is my favorite of the 3. Probably because I have a close group of friends that I bike with. They keep me motivated and we all keep a similar pace. That being said, I swim and run with the same group on occassion, but we all run at very different paces and swimming is more of an individual thing than the other 2. Running is probably my least favorite. |

Champion 5575 Butler | Subject: RE: Balanced Training...I always revert back to running I have always heard train your weakness, race your strength. I ran first and just moved to tri's last year and find it hard not to run but for me it tends to hurt more than swimming or biking (unless I crash) so it makes it easier to avoid. My current plan has me swimming 3 days a week, biking 2 and running 2. After my A race in July (oly) I need to pick a new a race, not sure if it will be a run or tri though, leaning towards my 2nd 50K so I will run much more. |
