Subject: First 2.4 mile swim!

I finally swam 2.4 miles this morning. I really wanted to cover the IM swim distance to help me get my mind around the distance. So the good news is I now know I can swim 2.4 miles - the bad news is, it took me 1:39.55 to cover the distance. Nevertheless, I felt pretty good the whole swim.

Below is my lap splits for the 85 laps. The 4 'spikes' were rest laps where I swam breast stroke.

I've run marathons so I know what it takes to run 26.2 miles and now I've swum 2.4 miles so I know how that feels. The only think remaining is to bike 112 miles. Uh…and then of course, do them all back-to-back. :-) So far my longest bike ride is 80 miles so I've got a way to go yet.

Congrats! I'm looking forward to practicing the full 2.4 myself. No plans to do it in the pool, however.

Nice work! And don't forget, your wetsuit will knock a significant chunk out of that time. Pre-IMAZ I could usually hold about 1:42/100m over 2.4 miles in the pool - I came out of the water in Tempe in 1:03.

Congrats on the breakthrough workout!

I'm not planning on wearing a wetsuit for the IMKY. The last time I wore a wetsuit was on the GCT HIM and the added buoyancy kept me bobbing around like a dang cork and I got motion sickness and started hurling and DNF'd. So, unless the water temp is in the 50s I'm not wearing a wetsuit. I know my swim time will be slower than everyone else but I'm not going to risk motion sickness again.

Congrats!  Watching you get into these longer distances has been fun.  80 mile bike rides and 2.4 mi swims!  Awesome.

Nice swim!
I do have one question though:
What are you using to collect swim times like that?

Timex Ironman Triathlon watch. $50 at Wal-mart. :-) I use it mainly to keep track of my laps - I hit the start/split button whenever I hit the wall in the shallow end. I then put the splits into Excel and graphed them to see how constant I was.
