Hi Everyone,
I have been training for my first trathlon for about 1 month. I plan to enter sprint distance tri's in the spring of 2005 and maybe work up to Olympic distance by late next year.

I've been an avid cyclist (road & mountain) for about the past 20 years - club rides, centuries, etc. So, I think the cycling leg will come easy. But, I haven't swum since high school and have never been a runner. The swimming is coming along OK. The running is killing me. Does anyone really feel comfortable running?

I started tri training for several reasons. First, to have fun; second to stay physically fit, and third for the challenge.

Great web site!

TJ

Welcome TJ,

Good start.  With a month of work, you are probably already seeing some good effects.  Triathlon traing is a good all around fitness program.  Keep us posted.

On the difficulty with the run, just keep gradually increasing the amount of running.  If you have a good cardio base from cycling, the run will come along pretty quick.  You just need to get the muscles used to that mode of exercise.

Welcome to BT!  Good luck training - running will get better with time.  Mix up your workouts, i.e. do a day of intervals just for fun

Try running VERY SLOWLY until you can go without getting out of breath... effort level should be about the same as on the bike... eventually your body will quit fighting it and it will accept that you're running. You may have to start out shuffling along, or doing like run 2mins, walk 2mins, etc.

I spent the first couple months of training looking for a TRI with like a mile run, cause I knew I couldn't run more than that... it's been 6 months, and I'm averaging about 35 miles / week running.... and I'm SLOW.

Give it time, and work up slowly... your body will come around.

welcome! running was a struggle for me. my muscles know swimming and cycling from almost the time they learned walking, but running was new to them. i highly recommend getting a heart rate monitor as an aid to work up to longer distances. it has taken me 6 months to break through the 10 minute mile barrier, and i'm finally now starting to enjoy running. it is still hard, especially compared to my genuine love for swimming and cycling, but it has gotten better. i think everyone here has a 'weak' area, so you are not alone.

Thanks to all who responded. On the running issue....I guess I'll just keep putting one foot in front of the other.

Autum, I think I will try the HR monitor. I have a HR monitor on my cycling computer, but do not have a HR monitor for running.

Hey TJ,

Congratulations on deciding to do the tri next year. I am in a similar situation as you are, except I am not the biggest cyclist. I've found doing interval training (run for 5 min, then walk for 3, etc) keeps me going. If you can find a trainings partner for the running section it will make it more interesting for you and help you improve faster as you're constantly being challenged by the other person. Good luck with your tri next year!

Hey Desertsix (great name).  Yes, I've seen you around here and was wondering in what part of NM do you live.  I'm in the southeast.  You know...the part that West Texas keeps trying to annex

I'm in the northwest almost in Arizona. One of my training rides is a 40 mile out and back to the state line.

Never been in Hobbs, but a state police officer pulled me over in Artesia and asked why I was in such a hurry. I looked around at the scenery, figured I was in enough trouble, and opted not to comment.
