After our group ride last week. Tony suggested we get together fot a mock-tri at John Tanner State park for a mock-tri. We are leaning towards October 2nd as the date. A link to the park is below

October 2 sounds great. I would like to suggest a cookout for lunch afterwards. We could start at 8:30am, swim-bike-run then around 11 or so, fire up the grill for an old fashioned barbeque.

We need to somehow get the word out to all the other Atlanta BT'rs.

Karl, Let's make sure we can use the grill w/o having to rent a shelter (unless that is the route we take). I have emailed the park in the past and they have been fairly good at responding. I can check again.

ATL BTers- Who would like to join us for the mock tri and cook-out??

Tony,

If that doesn't work, I have a handy portable gas grill we can use. The shelter would be nice to have in any case. This already sounds like fun.

I'm interested (as long as there isn't another hurricane that day). Any details I should know about?

As Tom mentions above, here's the link. You can also see Karl's (Motivated) post on the main forum.

http://gastateparks.org/info/jtanner/

It will be fun! We would like a final count re who will join us. If we all bring something different (food) that would be even better.

Feel free to email me with questions,
Tony

Tony,

I'm in and looking forward to it.  I had thought about bringing a few steaks and a bag or two of charcoal.

Also, keep in mind that alcohol is not permitted in the state parks, so bring a cup to camoflage your brewsky's.

See you next Saturday.

Just looked at the weather forecast, they're predicting a low of 56 degrees Saturday morning, which will make for a cool swim.  I'm bringing my wetsuit.  It will, however, make the bike and run quite pleasureable.

Unfortunately, due to a variety of reasons, we will not be holding the mock tri this Saturday as a group.  We will, however, work on planning future training events for the Atlanta contingent.

I told a couple of you that I'd give a report on my Stone Mountain experience. I didn't make it last weekend but I did today.

I'd give the park an A- b/c you have to pay $7 just to enter. You can buy an annual pass but I don't know how much that is. Rather expensive to ride your bike, in my opinion.

The good things about the park: very few cars, safe, scenic and well paved roads. There is an inner loop and an outer loop. I did the outer one, which was longer (a bit over 7 miles per loop). The roads are hilly, some more steep than others.

That's my report. Good ride and would do it again. It would be fun to get the Atlanta group together for a training ride there at the park.

Guess what I found... a bike path that leads into Stone Mountain Park. On the map, it states that the park is free for those who travel in that way. HUH! Then you can get away from paying $7. Not bad. Here's the website: http://www.pathfoundation.org/trails/stonemtn.cfm

The next thing is to figure out where to park to get on that path...

The PATH leading into Stone Mountain generally parallels East Ponce deLeon. On the weekends there would probably be parking available around the Mountain Industrial area. I used to live over there but it has been oh 15+ years ago. There may even be a Park-n-Ride lot right there.

If those are not good options, there is also the Old Town of Stone Mountain. It is like, 1/2 mi from the entrance to the park. You may have to have some since of direction, not much - just go towards the big rock, to find it. I will try to get over that way, maybe this weekend (friends in Decatur) and get better information.

Hi! I was at Stn. Mtn. last wekend with some friends and we had a fabulous ride! The outer loop is definitely more scenic and a better workout. I think you'd enjoy it. I also have a friend who told me where to park for free F.Y.I. Here are the directions:
For the future...to park for free when biking
Travel on 78 East and exit on Hugh Howell road
the ramp will take you to the first intersection with 2 gas stations.
make a left turn on Liburn-Stone Mtn.. the road ends shortly. Make
another left onto SilverHill road. continue for .5m or so and take a
left on Park blvd. It a residential street and there are speed bumps.
Continue until Park BLVD ends and make another Left. This street takes
you right to one of the entrance gates of the park, but right before
the entrance to your left and there is Stone Mount. CHristian School
parking lot. You can park in these spaces and bike into the park.

Hope you find this useful!
