That is pretty ambitious weight loss goals.

I've lost 90 in 4 years...sure I'm slow but it has stayed off and now what I do is a lifestyle no longer a diet.

Be careful and losing that fast it may hard to train well and you may be losing muscle not just fat. Your a guy I'm assuming so weight loss is easier but still that is ambitious.

Thanks.

I come from an endurance cycling background, so, at least part of the lifestyle is there. The changes I'm hoping to make this go around are, along with the running and swimming, are some dietary changes. I've cranked the protein intake up, and am trying to phase out alot of the sweets, and other garbage (I've not had a coke in 3 days now). We'll see how it goes.

That's 10 # per month, 2.5 per week.  I wouldn't say that's too aggressive, maybe a little ambitious.  But common wisdom says 2# per week is ideal

How tall are you??

Isn´t 155lbs a little low of a goal weight?

I am a woman and 5´7 and would definitly consider myself skinny (normal) at that weight

Just wondering.....

I feel 155 is safe, its where I was before we (wife and I) had kids a few years back. Tho, I have an appointment with a Dr. to discuss as well.

Not saying that your goal is not great, cause it is, BUT you may find that you do not lose the weight that easily.

If you do, that's great - but realize that YOUR body may not react quite the way you expect and you may find it takes you longer to lose the weight than your original plan.  Obviously, I hope that it works the way you want it to, but I ALSO know that it may not...

Ambitious goal indeed. It certainly would be difficult to lose that amount in that time period. You'd have to have no set backs, splurge days, drinking, constant exercising, etc.
For a while there my goal weight was 180#s, which means I have about 30+#s to lose.
Lately, I think that I'll focus more on my bodyfat percentage. The reason why I'm mentioning this is b/c if you are working out, you may be gaining muscle and if you are losing weight that fast, there is a good chance that its not all fat.
Part of what I'm saying is, to lose 14#s of fat and gain 4#s of muscle in 90 days is very impressive, but it would only show a 10# loss on the scale. Don't put too much stock into the scale. You want to keep or build muscle and lose just the fat.
Focus on your BF% instead. Your body has an amazing ability to hold onto its fat. Its not easy to do, so give it some time. Good luck on your venture to 155.

It is quite possible. Although, with such a low starting weight it might be difficult towards the end. Set specific goals, ie. no sweets, alcohol, etc. Stick with it no matter what. I am attempting the same thing. 10 lbs every 30 days.

So far so good. When I get a scale, and 'calorie counting book' to track the 'caloric deficit' I'm supposed to create, I'll track it weekly on my blog. A little side project to hold myself publicly accountable. Will update the thread when that happens, and Shmashin in your adventure.

Sounds like a challenge! I have been losing gradually since I started running almost 2 years ago. I was somewhere north of 250 (never weighed myself till Dr appt about 4 months after starting to run and was 250).

My first year, I made NO changes to my diet. Simply burning the number of calories required to train for a HM and then a full marathon were working to get my weight in the right direction.

I stalled from a few months before my first marathon last October at about 220. In November, I started to track my calories (as well as carb, prot and fat breakdown). Just by tracking, I changed my eating habits enough to lose another 5-10#, but then stalled at about 205-210# as I peaked for my second marathon in Feb.

Around then, I was suggested a book called Food for Fitness by Chris Carmichael (former trainer/nutritionist for Lance Armstrong). This book is great. It showed me why I was not losing weight when my training was peaking. Simply put I was not eating enough! For an athlete my size, the book recommended about 1000+ calories more than I was eating when I was peaking for a race. I was in a build phase, so I added 500+ to what I was eating and quickly dropped another 5-10#. I have been hovering around there for the past 4 months or so. I have not added more calories in spite of being at a peak for my June 2nd half IM (my first) and am sitting at just under 200. I am hoping to start losing again after my race while I am in a long base-build phase for the hot AZ summer.

Anyway, I was looking around and found a good web page with several different "ideal weight" calculators. http://www.halls.md/ideal-weight/body.htm. According to this, 195 is the very top weight where I can claim to be at a healthy weight, so I would like to drop about 20# as I know that would help my race times. I guess maybe I will challenge myself to lose 20 in 90 (starting in 3 weeks).

Well according to the calculator, (http://www.halls.md/ideal-weight/body.htm) I can stop 14lbs early and still be in good shape, however, I think I'm still going to head for the middle. At the moment, I'm tracking progress on my blog: http://trifatboy.com,if you want to play along, or, embarrass me into continuing.

Good luck and thanks for the link. I find it funny that all the way until I was early 30's when we had our first Son, I was maybe 140-150 and now I am 175-77 depending on the day. I have been obsessed with getting back down to the 150s, but this calculator says with these inputs my ideal weight should be 164.

Todays weight - 177

Height - 68"

Age 36

Sex - M

Now once I am 164 and I enter the same info for age, etc. it says my ideal weight is 158 and at 158, it says 155, at 155 it says 153 and finally at 153 it says 152 and it does not change after that. So would the first initial number of 164 be the "right" number or is 152?

That's 10 pounds per month - on most commercial diet plans you can drop a large amount the first week or two but then your body levels off and the average is about 4 pounds per month...

And the more you workout the more you're going to need to eat...

I think your goal is a little tough... but...

GOOD LUCK!

I may be in a minority here but that seems like too much too fast.  I dont know you but is some of that weight, not fat.  I was a weight lifter and was 185 last fall with pretty low body fat.  Looking at who is kicking my did not take a genious to figure out they are 150 or so.  I made a goal to get to 170.  But I did not have enough fat to take off to get there so some of the muscle had to go.  I stopped lifting and mostly reduced carbs and overall calories and increased my workouts.  I'm 172 now and can probably trim 3-4 more off.

So my point is you may not have that all in fat.  Also training will add some leg//back muscle and weight.

Well I kind of just did that. I was coming from a much higher starting point. I was 244 at Christmas and was down 30 in three months. I have hit a plateau at about 210 now. That is why I decided to train for a Tri. I hope to get to about 190.

Right now I am 6'2 (74 inches) and 210lbs. Hope fully by my 3rd tri of the summer which should be in August I should be near there. Although fitting easily into size 36 shorts is a very nice thing when at Christmas 38's were snug.

Woo Hoo... I'm not the only one. I do however need to do a :weigh in" soon to see where I stand after a few weeks.

TFB,

Ambitious for sure - but, I thinks it doable if you set your mind to it.

I use a program called Weightware (http://www.weightware.com). It has really helped me keep an eye on my weight loss efforts. Check it out - maybe it will help you as well.

Good luck!

you may be able to do this...especially with your background... i just lost 25 lbs since March (3.5 months)...no fitness background since 7 or 8 years ago. one thing i would do different is more strength workouts & protein along the way. i was taking the protein and working out at first, but i became impatient (it slows down the weight loss process). it is the best way though.

losing 2 lbs a week is healthy if you have implemented nutrition/exercise lifestyle changes.
