Lake Geneva Triathlon - TriathlonOlympic

View Member's Race Log
Fontana, WI
United States
65F / 18C
Sunny
Total Time = 2h 50m 21s
Overall Rank = 133/378
Age Group = M25-29
Age Group Rank = 16/33
Pre-race routine:

Not fun. Sore throat and drippy nose started the day before. Only cold medicine I could find was daytime stuff, so I didn't sleep well. Got up at 4:30 am, had iced chai/protein drink and clif bar.
Got good nights sleep the night before so I was okay even though I didn't sleep much.

Got to site, open racks, so I nabbed a good spot and setup T area in the dark. Note, a headlamp would have been useful.
Event warmup:

Jogged for ~10 minutes to shake off the cold and get warmed up. Stretched out.

Race was a little unorganized. Published start was 6:15 for the 1/2, 6:30 for the Oly, with time spaced between the waves. 1/2 didn't go off until 6:30, so I figured I had until 6:45 for the Oly, right? WRONG. So I didn't get to do any swim warmup, which sucked, though I was still warm/stretched from the run. Think I could have done better if I'd not had to rush the start.
Swim
  • 25m 51s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 43s / 100 meters
Comments:

It was out and back course. 1/2 IM, Oly, and Sprint on the same course. They timed it perfectly so that the 1/2 swimmers hit the Oly turnaround just as we rounded the buoy, and the combined 1/2 and Oly swimmers hit the Sprint turnaround just as they rounded the buoy. So the last 1/4 of the race was spent trying to swim around other swimmers.
What would you do differently?:

Get in a swim warmup. Still did a good time!
Transition 1
  • 02m 8s
Comments:

Got a little hung up getting out of suit, but still pulled off a fast T1.
Bike
  • 1h 20m 12s
  • 26 miles
  • 19.45 mile/hr
Comments:

This is where cold caught up with me. It was hard to drink, as swallowing was uncomfortable. I did force myself through a whole bottle of accelerade, but it wasn't easy. Was a bit chilly at the start of the ride as well, so took a few miles before legs warmed up.
What would you do differently?:

Not have a cold.

I pre-rode the course the weekend before which was immensely helpful for race day, as I knew where the rough spots where, which hills crested into a new hill, and which ones crested in a blasting downhill. Could have done better had I not been sick.
Transition 2
  • 01m 3s
Comments:

I almost wiped big time coming into the dismount chute. I unclipped both feet, swung leg over, like I had done millions of times before. This time though, I was still going about 20mph as the T2 was at the bottom of a hill so I had a lot of speed. Front end got squirrely and I almost dumped it. Hung on somehow, kept it upright, and made T2 at a blistering pace.
What would you do differently?:

Practice riding dismounts.
Run
  • 1h 01m 9s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 09m 52s  min/mile
Comments:

Wow. I've never been brutalized by a hill before. I was on this run though. It was about a 1/2 mile out of transition, and it was just brutal. My legs were obliterated when I got to the top, so I fell back into my comfort pace of about 9 min miles.

If it was flatter, I could have pushed the run harder, but I left it all on the hill.
What would you do differently?:

Train hills. To do well on this run, you have to own the hills.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around for about 15 minutes. Water, more water. Had an endurox recovery drink.

Had no appetite for food, though I pushed down another bottle of accelerade so I got some calories besides the endurox.

Strectched a lot.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Having a cold.

Lack of hill training on the run.

Event comments:

A little disorganized at times, which got frustrating, as you didn't know when things were going to start. Other than timing ( and a few confused course workers ) it was fairly well run.

I'd do it again as an Oly next year again, but no way I want to do a 1/2 IM on those hills. :)

Great race Chris!  Preriding the course helped me a lot too, since our courses converged...you didn't get the joy of the hill right aftert he 1/2 IM turnoff though, yikes!

I would do an Oly out there, but I don't think I'll do that 1/2 again...Spirit of Racine registration is open though and if you sign up before Nov it's cheaper and you get a "Training for Spirit of Racine" tank top I'm going to sign up as soon as our bank account recovers from this weekend, give it some thought

And while you're at it, how in the heck do you get through transition so darn fast?

When is Spirit of Racine? ( Oh wait, I have google, I'll go find it... :P )

Why transitions go fast, I dunno. I always feel like they are slow. For T1, I took wetsuit top off coming out of the water, ran at a pretty fast clip to my rack area, peeled off wetsuit, pulled on socks ( i keep them half inside out, so I put toes in and unroll over my feet ), bike shoes on, grab bike, put on helmet/sunglasses, and I'm off.

T2, I keep moving coming off the bike, so I jump off, and hit the ground running, keep running until I get back to the rack, shoes off, running shoes on ( gotta love speed/elastic laces ), helmet off, then out the chute.

I've heard great things about Spirit of Racine... When is it??? I should just Google it myself also... I was wanting to do Lake Geneva as my BIGGIE next year... Maybe Spririt of Racine would be better? I've heard about (and experienced first hand) the disorganization @ Fontana. Although you **DID** score a nice sweatshirt, didn't you???

CONGRATULATIONS!!!! Nice race... and an admirable time! I know it's hilly out there....

SMILE!!! LW

Congratulations coredump! Finishing in the top one-third of participants despite being under the weather is a great accomplishment.

Hey, does anyone know what happened at the bike transition gate? According to my wife and daughter (spectators), someone was taken away in the ambulance.

Yay for pictures!

I have a few more to post, but can't get them small enough to fit in the album here, so they are:

http://dump.segv.org/lg-tri/lg-tri.html

The latter are pre-race pics of the Yerkes Observatory ( featured on the run, as the 1/2 way point ), the race area the day before, a group mugshot of myself, Rookie44, and CindyK the evening before the race, and one of me and CindyK just before the start of the 1/2 IM wave ( which CindyK was in! ).
