Subject: Just signed up for my first tri!!!
Ok, so I signed up which means I really have to do it. I know I can, my goal is to finish...I am overweight and the training has helped me with weight loss. I am not a runner, but want to be in some sort of able running/jogging shape by the end of July.

I live in CA, and am super excited about training. My first milestone...I have to get a new bike, my old one finally had to be retired. Any suggestions as to what to get, I am not a big biker so don't want to spend loads of money, but then again, I want the right tools.....

Welcome and congrats on making the step.  Check out bikesdirect.com for inexpensive bikes, but go to you LBS to get fitted for a size first.  Remember not all bikes are not necessarily the same size so you might have problems buying online.  Look used also, craigslist, ebay, newpaper, etc.

welcome to BT!!  I'm doing my first race this weekend and folks here have been great.   Lots of good people/resources here.

Re: bike suggestions, for a newbie especially, I would advise against getting a tri-specific bike.  Get yourself a decent entry-level road bike and you're good to go.  I had to get a bike for the first time last fall, and I think I spent around $600 on it.  You could spend more or less, and really, for newcomers, it won't make that much of a difference whether you spent 400, 600, or 800.

Thanks for all the encouragement.....I can't wait....going bike shopping in a little while, and I think a good road bike will do, I can use it for double duty (riding around town).....

Here's to training hard......I've heard the toughest part is the back to back bike then run, so that's what my focus will be for a while.
