Subject: HIM Racine Vs. Steelhead Competition Data

Alright folks.  Here's the deal.  This thread is for data only - and eventually results.  Let's keep the trash talking in the other thread.  REPEAT - NO TRASH TALKING IN THIS THREAD.  Do this favor to help make collecting the data easier.

Post here or inspire me or PM me, whatever, the following information about yourself.  I'll put together a list that Birkie and others can use to handle the results calculations.  We'll also learn a little bit about each other.  This is usually considered a good thing.

1.  Real name - first names only, initials, whatever you want to use is ok.
2.  Category you are competing in.
3.  Area you are from and maybe where you are staying?
4.  Your approximate goal time - just take a guess, you're not going to be held to this.
5.  Is this your first, second, third HIM, etc?
6.  Anything else you want to say about this race.

Example:  Me.

John
M35-39
Northern Illinois - staying at the Marriot about 6 mi. from the race site.
Shooting for 5:30.  Will be sort of satisfied with anything better than 6:00 if it is fun.
First HIM.  This is probably my only tri this year.

I feel ok about my run but my bike and swim need a lot of work.  Actually, I don't even know if I feel ok about my run because I might trash it by trying to do too much on the swim and bike during the race.  Dang, this triathlon thing is hard!

should we ask for last names for verifying results or clearing up any potential post-race confusion?  just wondering

Some people might be funny about last names.  ID security.  We'll get bib numbers later so its not necessary now.  Of course, if they send it to me directly I'll have it and not post it when we post the spreadsheets.

When I get a chance I'll go around and inspire everyone to let them know to come here and post the info.

1.  Jim Kelley  Team SOR
2.  Elite Master (otherwise my AG would be 46-49)
3.  Western WI - 4 hrs northwest of Madison. Staying at Microtel Inn near the Racine mall
4.  Goal is sub 4:30
5.  Will be my 3rd HIM (2nd for Racine)
6.  I want revenge on that swim course.  I think I spent 1/3 of last year's swim leg wondering if I was on course or not due to the swells hiding the limited number of buoys they had - or maybe they had a lot of buoys but I just wasn't close to them    I also learned my lesson about eating Italian sausage at Olive Garden the night before the race.  I had 3 un-planned "pit stops" last year due to "GI issues" that killed my finish time.

Really looking forward to this race - a great venue!!

I'll kick it off for the slow peeps.

1. Joshua...and if you look to the left you can probably figure out my full name 8)

2. Can't remember if I reged as Clyde or M30-34 Probably Clyde (215lbs)

3. Work in Lake Forest, Live in Round Lake/Mundeline.  I'll be driving up the morning of the race.

4. Goal time...hmm...well I was originally using this not as a race but as a training indicater on my way to Ironman WI for next year.  Honestly I will be satisfied to finish without injury, mildly pleased to break 7 hours, and happy around 6.5 hours.

5. First Half Iron

6. I feel good about the swim, I'm fairly slow (1:50-2:00 per hundred meters) but I'm steady and can hold that pace the full distance.  I feel solid on the bike.  I know I can cut some serious time by hammering the bike but I'm worried about setting myself up for a poor run.  I'll take this as it comes on race day.  The run is my key limiter.  I'm slow at 27minute 5k pace and expect to average 10.5-11mm on the run.

This really isn't my A race for the year.  My A race will be Naperville a few weeks later where I hope to knock a solid 10 minutes off my sprint time.  This is more of a B race to see if I like the distance and want to attempt an Ironman.  I am taking the approach that the first time at any distance I am feeling it out.  I won't be really racing it until the second time.

5) This will be my second HIM. First is a month before in Grand Haven.

Looking forward to my first big tri event. This will easily be double+ the size of any other race I've participated in. Also looking forward to finally hooking up with the BT crowd in person. I'm feeling really good about my training at this point and am hoping for a solid finish.

Ok.  Here's the deal.  I'm making a list in the goals section of my log of everyone for both races.  Hyperlinks included so you can just jump to any of your respective team mates or the opposition for inspires and trash talking.

Also, I know there are people registered for each race that have not jumped into the challenge.  If you get word to these people let them know if I should add them to the list.  If something has changed and someone should not be on the list let me know that too.

My logs.

6. I went 6:16 in my first half last fall in FL, which included a complete melt down on the run. I'm looking for 5:45'ish. My Goals are Sub 30 swim, 3hr bike, and 2hr run. The swim time might be tough given the chop in the lake. I went under 30 in Florida but the lake didn't even have a ripple. I went 2:59 on the bike on a completely flat bike course and 2:35 melt down on the run. I think I can produce the same bike split on a hiller course and hope to have the pacing down to cut 30 mins off the run....My fitness is at an all time high and I've very excited about the race!!!!

6.  It's really starting to freak the heck out of me... my goal over the next 10 weeks is to spend enough quality time with my bike to really improve in that area.

5.  First HIM.  Happy to finish and get the experience.
6.  I am feeling good about the swim and the bike.  Still have a bunch of sessions left, but my endurance and strength are coming along good in those areas.   Little concerned about the run, b/c of Dec. knee surgery and just not putting in the volume I would like.  Its coming along, though.

Oh yeah, I now have one more goal.  Making sure I help Laura get below 6 hours!

1.  Real name:  Steve Emmert

2.  Category you are competing in:  SOR, M35-39 (although I turn the big 4-0 in September, and I thought USAT put you in an AG according to your age at the end of the year....yet I see SORT still has me listed in M35-39.)

3.  Area you are from and maybe where you are staying:  Crystal Lake, IL.  Staying at the Radisson.

4.  Your approximate goal time:  I squeaked in just under 5 hrs last year, but the weather was uncommonly perfect last year, and I positively drilled myself into the ground on the run when I saw I had a shot to break 5 hrs.  I'll be happy with 5:15, satisfied with 5:30, and pretty much okay with anything that includes finishing if I'm just not in the mood to hammer myself so hard ;-)

5.  Is this your first, second, third HIM, etc?:  This will be my 6th 1/2IM, and 3rd time at Racine (the other 3 were Lake Geneva, Muncie, and St. Croix).

 6.  Anything else you want to say about this race:  I predict headwinds this year, regardless of which direction you're riding ;-)  I kid you not that the first year they ran this race, under the name they should'a kept - The Dairyland Triathlon - we had headwinds on the way out on the bike, then the wind shifted and we had headwinds on the way back, too.

Oh, and it'll be a family get together of sorts for me again since my brother is racing too, assuming his foot heals by then.
