Subject: Can you fit a bike in a Prius?
I'm thinking of buying a Prius, but concerned about being able to transport my bike. I don't really want to use a rack for fear of having the bike damaged or stolen. Does anyone have experience putting a bike inside a Prius?

The other car I'm considering is the Honda Element. Two totally different cars, I know - but I'm torn.

I saw someone put a bike in a VW GTI this week:

If you can fit a bike in that car, I'm pretty sure you can fit one in a Prius.

Yes, you can. You have to pop off the front wheel, but yea you can get one in a Prius.

You can fit a bike anywhere, even in your bed. I use a rack for transport all the time, but take it inside with me at night when I travel. I never leave the bike inside or on the car when the car is not moving. When coming home from a bike race, I'll put the bike back inside my apartment before going out to meet friends for ice cream.

Don't know about a Prius but I use my Mini Cooper S to transport my bike, take the front wheel off and it fits inside nicely. Not sure I would want to drive 500 miles like that but it works for me.

I am with everyone that thinks it can be done ... but seriously ... take your bike with you and try it when you try out the vehicles. I wanted a Honda Element, but I wasn't sure that I'd be able to fit my dog crates in it which was a requirement. I took crates with me, and the salesman was more than happy to show me how the seats folded up and came out. We actually put the crates in the vehicle and drove it around. Just FYI, my TREK 1000 WSD fits easily in the Element with the front wheel still on.

Are you happy with the Element? Any negatives?

I can fit my Trek 100 WSD (51 cm) in my Mazda 3, with the front wheel and aerobars! This is a great question, though, because I would love a Prius but was concerned to switch from a hatchback to a sedan. I don't love taking the front wheel off, but it might be worthwhile. Thanks!

Actually, I love it. It fits my dog show and triathlon lifestyles to a "T". It's not as quiet or fancy as other vehicles, but it gets around 25mpg and holds a ton of stuff. The rear seating isn't something folks would like to ride for 1,000 miles, but there's a ton of leg room back there and for short jaunts is perfect. I like being able to get where I'm going with all my stuff ... and still be able to haul 3 other people around to dinner ... or perhaps to preview the bike course.

I have a Honda CRV (love it!).  My bike (and a boatload of other stuff) fits right inside.

I have an Element, too. I had a CR-V until Katrina, but I decided to go with the Element afterward because it's got more room and the clamshell tailgate is perfect for getting bike stuff out without having everything fall out. I easily fit a passenger, both of our bikes, and our luggage and tri stuff for a weekend trip.

If you can't get it in with one wheel off, take the other off!

I jammed my tri bike in the back of a wrangler this weekend. Two wheels off.

Yes, I can fit my bike in my Prius. You have to fold at least one of the seats down and take the front wheel off, but it works. I also have a hitch on mine, which works well for one or two bikes. A sturdy trunk mounted bike rack also works well on a Prius.

I'm another Element owner. As others have a mentioned it is fantastic for storing bikes & gear. You just fold one of the rear seats off to the side and roll your bike in without removing wheels. I love mine, but I recognize that the styling and such aren't for everybody. Plus, its a true 4 seater. 5 people does not work. That is an issue for some. If you like the styling and don't have a large family they are awesome.

With the Prius, I know that you dont really want to use a rack, but the fear of your bike getting stolen is highly unlikely esp wih a roof rack. The skewer that I got with my rack that holds the front fork locks, and sometimes Ill even throw a chain around the bike for extra protection. I even ordered from Rockymounts more locking cores wih the same key so that way all of my skewers lock the bikes in with the same key, its very convenient.

My training buddy has an Element. He can fit his bike in easily w/o taking wheels off. We can fit both of our bikes in without much work.

The prius takes a little more work, but with the hitch-mounted rack it is less of an issue.

But, my prius gets about 48mpg in warm weather (about 44 when it is colder).

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE my Element - not as good on gas, of course, but I can fit a refrigerator in it - and I have!! It is a fun and zippy car, except up really steep hills, good in the snow, too and bigger than the Prius, which is important for me with kids in the car.

Easily done in the Saturn VUE Greenline Hybrid. Cost less, and real world gets awesome fuel economy.

If I could fit 4 college students *and* a 6-foot Christmas tree in my VW superbeetle, you can put a bike in a Prius.

You CAN fit a bike in a Prius - just probably not a really large one.  There's a huge amount of space in the car, but it's not very long.  My 44cm bike with 700c wheels and aerobars fits with room to spare, without taking any parts off, and I could probably fit another bike in there with it if needed.

Also, the front seats  both fold down completely flat, which is neat.  I always figured I could sleep comfortably in my car if I wanted to take it across country on a hippie hybrid road trip.

BikerGrrl - I am confused.  The Prius is a hatchback.

Do you have the Mazda 3 5 door right now?  That's what my boyfriend drives and in comparison, his cargo area is a little longer but not as high or wide (thanks to the Prius egg-shape).  I don't think you'll have trouble getting your bike in the Prius.

I have a Honda Fit and can fit quite a few bikes into the back of my car since the back seats fold completely flat.

(that is not me - i found this pic on the internet - mine is black )
