Subject: MTN Bike Rebuild Questions

I took my old MTN bike out over the weekend and decided it's time to either buy a new one, or completely overhaul the components of my old one.  If I bought a brand new bike, I'm looking at something like a Specialized Hardrock Sport, $390.00.  If I overhaul my bike (the frame is in perfect shape), $228.00 (w/out tax).  Here is what I would replace my components with (note, these are figures from Nashbar's website):

  1. Crankset: Shimano C051 Dual Ring w/ Guard ($15.00)
  2. Front Derailleur: SRAM X7 ($30.00)
  3. Rear Cassette: Shimano HG-50 9 speed ($20.00)
  4. Rear Derailleur: SRAM X7 ($55.00)
  5. Breaks: Nashbar Deluxe ($50.00)
  6. Break levers/shifters: SRAM X7 9 speed Twist Shifters ($58.00)

Now, what I need is advice: the cost savings of rebuilding the bike is $162.00 (no tax figured in, or cabling).  For the potential hassle and headache of rebuilding the bike, would it be worth it in cost savings, if the frame is perfect and the right size?  The frame is old steel frame (Free Spirit from Wal-Mart), but very rigid and feels good.  Also, did I miss anything important in the configuration of components?  Thanks in advance!!

I suggest buying the Hardrock or finding a used MTB (they are there if you got the time).

Refitting a Walmart bike much less an old one doesn't make sense. Where you will see the biggest difference is in the wheelset and the fork. Also, if you buy the Hardrock from a LBS you should get free adjustment for life.

Thanks, guys, for the advice.  I just saw Trek mtn bikes brand new for $309.00 (3700).  I have ridden Treks before and love them.  I think I'll be much better off going that route.  Thanks so much for the heads up!

They price them that way for a reason. Spending a little more up front gets you a lot more bike then if you upgrade later on

I agree with all. Maintainance of your type of current bike to keep it ridable (new tires, chain lube, replace broken lever, etc) is reasonable, but don't spend mney on upgrading components to get a "better" bike. put the money aside for hwne you are ready to invest in a new, or new to you bike. you may be able to get your money to go twice as far if you buy a used bike from a shop, craigs list or classifieds.

check the craigslist areas for your closest college campuses.  Summer has started there and kids need money.

Buy used.

lets not forget all the other components you'd have to upgrade to attempt to equal the specialized: wheels, disk brakes, cables, seat, bar and stem, bottom bracket... etc

not to mention a steel frame has got to weigh a LOT.  go with the nice new alum Specialized MTB.  I rode a Hardrock for 4 years.  the only reason I gave it up was bc i got a little $$ from workers comp and they basically bought me the new full susp ride

great bike for the $ if you ask me.
