I've been using Accelerade on my long runs and rides and how found that when I also use a gel, Hammer Gel, I get quite an upset stomach for about 20 minutes. Has anyone else had the same experience or have I missed something. How about what kind of drinks do u use? Do you use the same for training and for racing? I heard some guy at a race on Sat trying to explain the concoction of ingredients he had in his bottle and I wondered if there was a reason for that. Just some questions I'd thought someone with more experience could answer. Thanks!

I'm pretty sure this forum has been done before, but I didn't get to play along last time, so woo hoo!!

I use 1/2 watered down gatorade for the beverage and Gu (usually Vanilla Bean, Banana, or Tri Berry). I hear that you need to keep up your water consumption when "taking" a gel. I can't remember why!! But maybe that's what is causing your cramps. Also, de/over-hydration can cause pretty bad cramps, so make sure you're not doing either of those.

I tend to use the same for training and racing...gotta stick with what works!!

Actually I didn't have any trouble with cramps or dehydration. Just wondered if there was anything better to use. Sorry if this has been done to death, I'm pretty new to this whole thing.

Thanks for your patience!

Re: gels, I heard if you don't get enough water, your tummy will cramp up and you'll get the runs. Usually 1 or 2 mouthfuls of water/fluid is fine.

I like this stuff called Hydralite by Gookinaid. It's an electrolyte replacement and also has some carbs in it, no one else I know uses it much less has heard of it - you can get it at REI. I'll put a bottle of that and a bottle of Accelerade on my bike when I train or race.

Accelerade just seems too thick for me to drink when I am running - I can't explain that. So that stays on the bike.

As far as gels, I seem to be able to tolerate them all, and wash them down with the Hydralite. I especially like the Accelerade Gel with the protein. I feel like I recover better the next day on long runs or rides.

I've never tried the Hammer Gel. It could be the one brand that makes me ill. Have you tried any other ones?

Autumn,

Do you do your Emer-gen C's and all the other packets in the prescribed ratio? And use it while you train....like during, to hydrate? Doesn't it make you burp from all the fizz?

I dump Emer-gen C's into big quart water bottles, but very diluted.

I love that stuff.

Does anyone use that carb pro stuff? I know you can get an insanely large amount of calories into a bottle by using it. Does it taste okay? Does it really help?

I like SportSafe Endurance.  HammerGels are a bit too sweet for me (I need LOTS of water to wash those down), although I like the AccelGels.

Haven't tried the honey-trick yet, but water and apple juice (1:1 ratio) is pretty good too.  Apple juice is ALWAYS on sale 2 for 1 around here...

Holleebeek, Yep this thread was run to death a couple of months back and it was all my fault.  I ended up posting on personalbestnutrition.

http://personalbestnutrition.com/cgi-bin/forum/YaBB.cgi?board=news;action=display;num=1092967115

I followed Brian's instructions nearly exactly, except I used Accelerade instead of Cytomax since I absolutely CANNOT tolerate the taste of that stuff.  I used this plan for my 1/2 IM on Saturday and it worked well (I used HammerGel as well).  I DID still get some mild cramping toward the end of my bike and beginnng of my run...a bathroom break (well ok WOODS break but I will leave that for another thread) took care of the issues.  Using straight Accelerade was horrible, so this was a vast improvement.

Next year I am going to experiment with mixing the CarboPro with Gatorade instead of Accelerade and see if that helps.  I have not noticed any taste difference with CarboPro, but I cramp far less with the CarboPro/Accelerade combo than with Accelerade alone.    Hammer Nutrition makes a drink also, I can't remember what it's called but I would like to try it sometime too.  I wish I could race without cramping

Hey Deejster.
I use Carbo pro with Accelerade. Carbo Pro is colorless and tasteless and has 100 cal/scoop or something like that. I use it with just water as well

i think its supposed to be a packet per 8 oz, but i always do at least 10 oz. i mix 2-3 packets of emergen-c in a nalgene, and drink some of it before i go, leaving the rest in the fridge for when i get back. then i take a bottle of plain water and a bottle of the alacer electro mix in another bottle.
