Subject: Luray Sprint Triathlon?
Anyone know anything about this particular race? It's the one in mid August- the 19th, to be exact. There are two on the same weekend- an Olympic distance and a sprint. I am eyeing the sprint, as it is my first race. But I am wondering about what category I should, or even could sign up for. On the site, there is a workshop before this particular race for beginners and novices; there is also a list of all the different categories and who is eligible for each. And there is a Novice class- but it is not a choice if I try to register. The only option I am eligible for is just age group. So I wonder, can a novice even sign up for this event? It doesn't say we can't, but it's not clear that we can. Any thoughts? Should I just sign up for the age group?

Also, I didn't get far enough into the registration process to know whether or not they need this stuff, but I'm assuming they'll need times in the various sports? I don't have those, as I've just started training. I don't care if they seed me dead last, but do I need times to be able to register?

I tried sending an inquiry through the website, but no one has responded, and there doesn't seem to be a number I can call.

Hi,

Yes, of course you can sight up and do the AG. This race is just like any other race from the VA Triathlon Series. From what I've heard these races are superb. I just completed Reston Sprint Tri (my first) and it is also part of Virginia Triathlon Series.

You can sign up for a clinic here:  http://www.enduranceworks.net/clinics.html

DavidGlover, Local Tri celebrity, great athlete and the race director is teaching it. I know him personally, he is truly a great coach.

Thanks! And I actually got a response from the website staff today- they said to go ahead and sign up with the age group, and then said that I would have lots of fun It was a really nice short little message.

I really like how everyone on this board is super-encouraging, and it seems genuine. I've never really experienced that before in athletic pursuits. My friends that I climb with are cool of course, and I had a few dance teachers that were super-positive. But in general, I've always experienced competitiveness, cattiness and people (esp. men) telling me that I can't hack it, or can't keep up.

Thanks

I am in Fairfax at the moment- right near the Metro stop (Vienna/Fairfax). I will be moving to a townhouse right off Rte 7 about 2 miles away from my office I'll be near the Trader Joe's and Whole Foods Plazas, if you know where those are.

This race was my second Triathlon when I competed last year. The swim is in a mountain lake and was cold last year but with the later start this year should be warmer. Keep an eye on the water temp at the VTS site. If it's wetsuit legal I would suggest renting one.

The bike course had some hills but nothing too hateful. The roads are in good shape and have little traffic. the views were great. The run was a mix of grass, trails and pavement and one of my favorite courses that I competed on last year. The run goes out and back across a dam and then a short trail section that drops you off onto a road. That section is an out and back and then its into the finish chute.

Setup does a great job and all of their races are well run.

Best of Luck.

Ooh, I like the sound of grass and trail for the run- will be easy on my knees. My right knee sometimes acts up, though so far it's been fine. But certainly running on dirt is better than concrete.

This sounds like a nice challenging race.  The hills out there may be telling me to sign up for the sprint distance.

I did the Luray Tri Clinic today, hosted by David Glover, the race director. Basically we did each piece of the Sprint race, with a 1/2 hour or so break in between each for questions, etc. It was a lot of fun, and a great workout.  Oh, and it is a noncompetitive thing.

If you are going to do this race, I highly recommend it, if only for the bike portion. The course is very hilly and challenging... I have to disagree with the fellow who said there weren't any that were too hateful. There is one hill in the 16th mile which for me at least, was really tough. Especially since it comes at the end of the bike, the part where you are supposed to be spinning to loosen up your legs for the run. We were all commenting on how brutal it was.

The run course was pretty easy, but the one we did was not on dirt/grass... was on asphalt. The swim was in the lake, approximated the race course.

If you are doing the race, get in some hill work on the bike.

He is doing the same clinic two weeks before the race. There is a link on enduranceworks.net to it. It costs $60.

Yeah, I'm going to sign up for the clinic on the 11th of August- I had a previous commitment today and couldn't do todays'.

Now that you say that about the hills , I'm really worried about the bike part, especially since I was so horrible yesterday. I might want to reevaluate this triathlon thing - might not be a good idea after all...

Don't give up too quickly.  I did my first race a couple of weeks ago and I'm hooked on them. I was very nervous wondering if I would finish it and it was not as bad as I imagined.  I saw your logs and you are doing great.  This website and the BTer's are very helpful and encouraging.  Just go out and have fun.

I'm signed up for the luray olympic . A few questions for those that have done this in the past, How far is the swim for this one, and is it wetsuit legal. How steep of grades will we be biking and does the run go up hills as well? ... I could probably search on their website for this info, but im too lazy at this point. I'm just curious if i'm gonna need to incorporate hills somehow in my workouts..

The website says "hilly" for the bike course. Practice your hills. Not sure if it's wetsuit legal or not - depends on how warm the water is. I think I'm going to forego it since at least a month ago, I was told by the RD at a tri clinic that the water was like 75 - I'm sure it's the same, if not warmer by now. Plus, it's a short distance and I'm not so awesome that it's gonna save me much more time in the water than it will take to get the darned thing off. If you go to enduranceworks.com, there is info about the pre-race clinic (info is also on the VTS website) and and an email address for the RD, who can probably answer questions like that for you.

I rode what is supposed to be the course at a clinic ran by the RD a couple of months ago.  There is one hill, in the last mile of the bike, which is a 20% grade.

Yes, 20%.

It is the hill that you fly down at the beginning of the race and think to yourself, "oh s**t... I will need to go back up this hill in about 16 miles."

I might do this race.  We're having a baby on 8/3.  If my mother-in-law can get 3 weeks off from work, I'm in.  We shall see.

20%......crap.

I'm screwed - I'll be going 5mph up that thing. Thinkin' I might have to withdraw from this race and eat the $70some that I paid for it.

you won't be alone (re: 5 MPH up the hill).

I've seen you post elsewhere that you might need to back out of the race. OK, that is enough of that, young lady. You'll do the race and you'll do fine. Time to suck it up buttercup.
