Quick poll/ question:

When swim training, do you do flip turns, capitalizing on the nonstop nature, or do you touch and go, eliminating the big pushoff.  I am not sure if there are pros and cons or one better than the other.  Just didn't know if some of the seasoned vets had any thoughts/advice.

BTW, I know this obviously only applies when training in a pool for all of you chuckle heads out there...

I do flip turns, but I've been swimming forever, so I couldn't imagine not doing them. You can still get great pushoffs doing open turns, you just lose the fluidity you get when flipping.

Flip turns, just cuz I always have.  No big deal if you don't do them.  I disagree that there is no benefit to doing them.  IMHO, I think that the rhythm of swimming into a well-executed flip turn and continuing through the swim is better than stopping at the wall and turning around.  Plus (if done right) they look cool.

As an aside, I've never understood the philosophy behind not pushing off after a turn, open or otherwise.  Yes, the argument goes, you don't have a wall to push off every 25 yds/mtrs in OW.  But then again, you don't come to a complete stop every 25 yds /mtrs either.  Neither is an ideal OW swimming simulation, only OW swimming is.  I don't know a single triathlete that subscribes to the no push off philosophy.

Yep, it's just second-nature at this point. When I come to a wall, I do a flip turn.

I can't and don't do them.  I have tried to learn a few times but with no teacher had no luck.  Plus my pool is 3.5 ft deep ad the wall and I am 6'7".  I have this fear of hitting the bottom of the pool although I doubt is is highly likely.  I try and push off a little but not real hard.  True you can't do them on open water but like others said you don't come to a complete stop either so I try to split the difference.

Old age and a sometimes fragile lower back have forced me to give up flip turns.  I don't think it really makes much difference in my OW swimming.

Ditto. Flip turns.

Then again, I learned how to do them when I was 13 years old and they are second nature to me.

I never learned how to do a flip turn well so I don't just a quick turn and go, I agree the fluidity would be nice to achieve at some point but on the other hand the pushoff may give you faster laps than you would get in OW. I know I am faster in OW becasue I do not have to stop to turn so a little personal psych out

I taught myself how to do them back in the one season I was on a swim team (way back in '90-'91), but have not adapted it again in my tri training.  It just doesn't hold any value for me personally.

And I have gotten some monster pus-offs of the wall with my open turns, but I try not to do that often as gliding a 1/4 of the pool doesn't benefit my slow azz when it comes to actually swimming. Tongue out

I can flip turn, but don't usually.  They seem to bother my ears.

I can turn almost as fast touch-and-go as I can flip turning.  There is very little difference in my times either way.

Flip, I find it helps with my rythm.  I try not to get to great a push off, just enough to get my momentum back from the "stop".

But I think it is just a matter of preference.

Just my .02 worth.

I have never been able to do a flip turn in my life without ending up in the lane next to me swiming the wrong way so I've always done the open turn at the wall, a little slower yes but Oh well. I still get a pretty good push and I try to time my breathing with the turn but it dosen't always work. I think the stop and turn gives a little extra breath. My method got me through my oly last spring and hopefully will get me through a HIM this fall.

No flip... No strong push off the wall. I understand the fluidity point and can see the benefit. But I never learned... so I don't try.

I used to do flip turns, but stopped them last year when a back injury left me physically incapable of doing them. I am now physically capable of doing them, but have had a really difficult time returning to them for some reason (I get all out of breath and stuff). I do miss the fluidity I used to have when doing flip turns, and my open turns certainly aren't as fast .

Once every couple of weeks I'll do a set where I do open water flip turns near the flags. It's mostly just for fun, but there are times OWS that you'll get grabbed, smacked, or have to readjust goggles and have to start from scratch without a push...that's the best way I can rationalize its use as a change of pace, anyway. Anyone else do that? The rest of the time it's flip turns.

Growing up swimming competitively, I always did flip turns so it is my natural instinct.  Also growing up swimming, I know how to get a killer push off of the wall with the flip turn, taking out some of the mileage of swimming.  So I wanted to see if there was a reason not to do them.  It appears that if they can be executed correctly (ie not end up in the other lane as our unfortunate esteemed colleague has done) then go for it.  Maybe I will lay off the push so much.

As a side note, how many strokes are you guys/gals using per length of pool (assuming 25 feet).  I am about at 21 strokes (each hand is counted) form a dead stop and I don't know how that compares to the norm.

I took the time to learn flip-turns in college, and I've done them ever since. I'm not going to add to the debate either way -- I have my own reasons for training the way I do.

Open turns. It's one of the ways I keep my beginner triathlete street cred.
