There are a bunch of folks going (myself not included). Go on one of the other threads in this Arizona board and find StandswithFist, Chili, SportyJ, Robot, Cordova61, etc.  I think they are all doing it. They could probably help you out.

I'm also... probably ...doing this. Jen (SportyJ) and Chris (Cordova61) were looking into housing possibilities up there.

I'm new to the area, so it'll be my 1st Mountain-person tri. I was almost convinced into doing the 1/2 until I saw the price tag. (Also trying to be a bit easy on the pocketbook for this one.)

Camping by far is the cheapest, but you can find some mom and pop hotels off the main road thru town. The bad thing is that they are close to the train tracks, but you can usually get into them for around $50. There is a 5k and a 10K up there a few weeks before if you want to see how the elevation affects you?

Just a warning for those staying in Flagstaff motels: Those along much of old Route 66 are right along the train tracks. I found this out to my dismay last December when I got to hear a very loud train horn every 30-60 minutes all night long.  I am told it is much more tolerable if you are on the side of the motel away from the tracks. (Best Western King's House in my case)

ScottNM,

Thanks for the warning!  3 of us going on this trip graduated from NAU.  We feel that in order to get the right ambience of Flagstaff, you HAVE to get a room next to and facing the train tracks.

But now Robot has come up with the genius idea of renting a bouncy house and setting that up at Lake Mary to sleep in. LOL

May I present Exhibit Number one:

Camping in a bouncy house...doesn't get much better than that my friends...

LOL - I was thinking the whole time that I was the victim of some grand Flagstaff practical joke.

Let's just say that it didn't exactly enhance my subsequent performance at the Las Vegas Half Marathon..

I realize this is an old thread, but are you guys still doing this race?

I'd like to do it, but it seems like a bunch of the hotels (at least the ones I can check online) are all booked up. Anyone know of any super-secret hotels in the area that might have a vacancy?

I live in Flagstaff but would go online too to book a room... I can't believe that all hotels would be sold out this far in advance!?

We have hundreds of them! Most are along old Rte 66 and along the train tracks. Avoid those unless you like to be woken up 50 times a night.

Other than that I would keep surfing the usual places on the web and check directly with all the major chains.
