First of all I am very happy to be on the route to my first ironman before turning 30...a personal goal of mine.

Back to business...I am trying to decide betoween the trek 1000 or 1500, and have also considered the speedster s60 or Giant OCR2.
I have read a bunch of reviews and found mixed emotions among reviewers out there. I would be willing to spend $1200 tops...and I would only use the bike for triathlon training on a non-competitive level, however planning on ironman for 2009.
All feedback will be greatly appreciated!
thanks! it.s good to be here!

Well there is an old saying. Get the most bike you can from the start.

I would check I think the the 1500 and 2100 are the same price but maybe I am confusing 2 different models. 2100 has a better frame. 1000 does not a good companants. If you want to work to Ironman you need a good ride. Not sure how long you plan on using this bike or hope to get a tri bike in the future but I would go with the 1500 either way.

The main difference between the Trek 1000 and the Trek 1500 are the components used.  The Trek 1500 has much nicer components and the ones on the Trek 1000 are more entry level.  Personally, I would go with the 1500.  I was able to get mine on sale for $850.  It is definitely possible to get them cheaper.

As far as the difference between the Treks and the Giants, a lot of that will come down to which bike is more comfortable for you.  Try all of the bikes you are considering buying and get the one in your price range that fits you the best.

The 1500 has a higher level of componentry, mostly Shimano 105 versus Sora (or lower) on the 1000. The 100 is a perfectly serviceable ride, but as chirunner said, (within reason) always get as much bike as you can afford.

Do keep in mind that the bike is only a part of your outlay, especially with a beginner, as you will also need a helmet, pump, seat bag with tools, water bottles and cages, bike shorts, pedals and shoes, bike computer, and on and on. Make sure you have room in your budget for all that as well.

I bought the 1500 last fall and love it for a road/tri bike. I bot it for 900 and then added clipless pedals and an aerobar (which is well worth it). the whole set up cost around 1100.

I have a 1500 and think it's a fine ride.. Got it in 2004 and it continues to treat me well. Added clipless pedals right away and just recently added an aerobar..

I haven't met many people who had a 1500 they didn't like.....

Good luck to you!

Definitely go with the 1500 if you can afford it. As stated above, the components are much better and you'll probably be able to get many more miles out of it before you start to crave a new ride.

I just bought my bike and test rode the Trek 1500 (06 model) and OCR 2 (I ended up getting the OCR A1).

From my experience (newb with bikes) I found the 1500 to be much more aggresive sitting stance, much more of a racer versus the OCR 2.

If I had not bout the OCR A1, I would of instead taken the Trek 1500 for the components compared to the OCR 2 that many have mentioned.

Also check out the TCR series from Giant if you want a more aggressive model.  Talk to your LBS about any last year models.  I got my TCR2 on 2006 and it was an 05' model for $300 off.  Not bad for a ~$1000 bike.

Go with the 1500 for sure.  You should be able to pick one up for right at $1000.  The 1000 has very low end components and doesnt even have the newer style brake lever shifters.  You will be much happier with the 1500 and it will be easier to upgrade the bike in the long run.

I'm also a beginner.  I purchased a very gently used '05 1500 for $700cad, including clipless pedals and aerobar.  I really like this bike and I'm sure it will be more than enough bike for me for quite some time.

As stated before...Get the most for your money....look at previous year model bikes. I will be picking up a 2006 (out of the box) Fuji Team Pro on Friday, June 1st. Retail on this bike last year was $2600, I'm getting it for $1500 from the LBS. The bike has a full carbon frame and fork, all Ultegra components except the Rear Der, which is Dura Ace, and weighs in at 17.4 lbs.

Bottom line, if you shop around you can get a good bike for your price range.

Good Luck, and happy riding!
