I guess that would depend on if you trained for the half or not. If you train for the half, I would think that a 10K would be a good way to taper. If you were training for the 10K then the half might be too much.
I don't know how much you have been training

I think you will be ok. Make sure that you're training for the 1/2 marathon distance and not the 10K distance...that way the 10K can actually fit into your 1/2 training!

Good luck autumn!!

I agree with what Madcow and Jasmine said. Train for the 1/2, and you'll be fine. Doing the races in back to back weeks, isn't an issue, either.

IMHO, the difference in difficulty between a 10K and half isn't all that much. The jump from a 1/2 to a marathon...a different story.

I've done a 15k, followed by a 1/2 Mary a couple of times in the past, so it can be done. A couple of things. Make sure you are trained up to the 1/2 distance, it's a pretty big leap from 10k to 13 miles. Also, I wouldn't plan on "racing" both races. My experience has been that you really can't recover in time to race both well. So pick the one you want as your goal race, then run the other as more of a training run.

Good Luck

thanks for the feedback everyone. i have been training towards the 10k, which is in about 3 weeks, so i might still have time to up my distances to work towards the 1/2 instead (which is in about a month). if i did the 1/2, it would also mean one less backpacking trip this year, so i need to talk to my people and see if that would be okay. not enough weekends!

I did a duathlon (8K run, 56mile bike, 13.1 mile run) last weekend, and I am doing the Philadelphia Distance Run (Half Marathon) this weekend. I pushed it pretty hard last weekend, and after an easy run last night my hamstrings are still toast. I am going to treat the PDR as a training run, and just enjoy running with thousands of other athletes. As for the 10K to Half, you'll be fine. Good luck, and I think it is safe to say that we all need more weekends!

Just be careful. Looking at your logs, I see you have only a couple weeks over the last two months where you ran over 13 miles. To ramp your single-run mileage to 13 on such a small base does carry some risks.

Wholeheartedly agree. I tell everyone that if you can run a half you can run twenty. It's that final 10K that's the bitch.

Where was that duathlon? That sounds like the kind of event I'd love to have a go at

that's not so much for lack of running as it is lack of logging. there's a few weeks black before my first tri where i was just way to busy to log or post here. on average i've doing at least 10 miles a week.

Ian,
that duathlon was supposed to beb a Half Ironman, but the lake had a sewage problem. It was in Bear, DE, and it was called the Delaware Diamondman Regional .5IM Championships. It was a rather interesting race, and if there was another of its kind, I would consider giving it another go.

Hey Autumn, I was just thinking of doing the same thing. I was going to wait until next year, but my running has been improving steadily so I thought MAYBE try a 1/2. But I'm not sure my mileage is up there enough. I'm doing the Terry Fox 10k this Sunday and looking for a 1/2 to do in the fall.

What are your running distances for your workouts?? I've just moved up mine to a 5k, 7k, 10k, perweek. Can anyone help with what mileage I should be doing per workout, or per week, before attempting a 1/2??

Thanks for this thread Autumn.

Still, looking to do a single long run longer than your weekly average does carry risks. Remember the 10% rule.
