Subject: Half marathon possible in two months?
I am looking into doing a half marathon at the end of November with some co-workers. The longest run I have had so far is only 5mi. Is it possible for me to get to 13mi in two months without damaging something? I want to finish the HM, not compete in it, so I am not worried about times but I would like to run/jog the whole thing. Any ideas or plans people have used successfully?

You're on the cusp. If you're doing five miles on your long run, and (simplisticly) add one mile to that every week, in eight weeks you would be at thirteen. I'm don't think I'd recommend it, though, especially if your training log is accurate. It looks like your highest weekly mileage over the last two months has been 13 miles. I'd say you have too shallow of a base to attempt something like this. How about shooting for one in three or four months?

Yes you can do it. If you are willing to not get too stressed about times 21.1Km is a pretty forgiving distance, unlike 42.2 which is not. Follow the 10% rule and see if you can get your mileage up slowly in time. If you can run one long run a week gradually pumping up the distance to about 18Km you will run the last few Ks on adrenaline. Make sure you have a quiet week the week before to rest up. Good luck. Jeez Bear you are quicker on the typing than me! No-one else had answered this post and I was being kind. But you have already been to the training log and all - very thorough! However if joscon is happy to walk some it may be a very sore and sorry day but I am thinking this is a bit of a social thing and the end result of staggering over the line is the desired outcome despite the big dose of DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness) that will come afterwards ;-) So basically joscon go in with your eyes open! You are underprepared nbut it depends how badly you want to do this specific event. Dx

Thanks. Yeah I know I dont have a lot of miles logged....especially with being sick the last two weeks. If I have to walk some of it I am fine with that, I figure it will take me about 2:45-3:00 to finish so I am definately not planning on breaking any land speed records. I also wanted to do this as my "big" accomplishment for the year, since I havent done any tri's this year and have just tried to get back in shape for next season. I guess I will work on lengthening my long runs a little and see how things look in a month. I am also planning on trying a 15k (again just hoping to finish) in about a month or so.

Not sure that a three-hour half counts as a "big accomplishment," but if it floats your boat go for it. Just be careful and cognizant of the risks.

Well considering I usualy avg around 9:40 miles now, I figure I am looking at 2:10 best case scenario....so I figure that time outta be about right. And it would be a huge deal for me since I havent run that far since high school 12 years ago and have been in about as bad a shape as you can make a body until about 6 months ago.

All the more reason to be cautious. Do you want to risk your progress by trying to do too much, too fast?

Three-hour half is 13:44 pace. I've WALKED a whole marathon in 5:38 (12:54 pace).

Whatever you decide, good luck, be safe.
