Subject: Benefits to running downhill?
I know the benefits of adding hill work to your runs but what about running downhill? Are there benefits to this as well or is it just a break from running the flats? The reason I ask is that 1/2 my Fri night 3 mile hill run is downhill. I'm wondering if I should look for a course with more flat than descent or just enjoy the break from the climbs.

Thanks for any feedback.

Rob

I don't think there is anything food about running downhill. For me, it is not that much of a break.  Yes, you don't have to work as hard, but running downhill can cause some difficulties with your knees, feet and back.

Yeah, what Tom said. The only benefit I can see to intentionally running downhills, would be if you're running a hilly marathon or one with a net elevation decline. Those marathons are murder on your quads, and training on downhills will toughen them up somewhat.

Just remember the heightened risks of injury.

Welshy hasn't had breakfast yet I think. His last 2 posts have been food related ;-) Running downhill is very bad - you can practice it if you need to for a specific course but don't go out of your way to do it. Run relaxed and think you are water flowing downhill. Most of us tend to brake and cause ourselves all sorts of trouble as my esteemed colleague Mr Welshy has pointed out. Dx
