There are those that have and those that will.....I am now one of those that have. Flatted on the road that is. Happened yesterday morning about 10 miles into my 70 miler.....Now I'm mostly a pre-dawn rider/runner to maintain domestic harmony, so I'm cruising along when I feel this shudder from the rear (of my bike) at 4:24 am (I looked). First time this has happened, but I knew exactly what it was. Luckily, I was about 20 yards from a street light so I walked back up the road so that I'd be able to see better.

My "pit time" was a less-than-blazing 20 minutes but, given the conditions and that I'd never changed a tube on the road, I was pretty happy. And for those of you who are part of the "those that will" camp, you will hear it from many sources, but I would STRONGLY recommend that you practice this!! It would've been a LONG walk back home if things had gone bad and calling home at 4:30 in the morning with 2 kids in bed (6 and 2) would NOT have gone over well.....I will also start carrying more than one spare tube with me on long rides!!

I brought my new road bike home Friday afternoon. Took it out for a quick few miles,
and about a mile from my house...POP. Rear tire. Good thing it was only a mile from
my house, because I did not have a spare inner tube, or phone. I dont mean to brag, but
it only took me about 15 minutes to fix once I got home.

Well, at least you were able to change it. My first on-the-road tire change probably took more than 20 mins, so it's all good. Practicing tire changes is like the most annoying thing ever, but it does help. I got mine to under 5 in practice conditions...not sure how that will translate on the road, and I am still not sure how people can do it in under a minute! I would like to get faster, because for now, in a sprint, oly, or HIM, a flat tire for me = race over .

I thought that we were talking about falling over at a stop sign becuase you forgot about being clipped in. Or is that the "other other club"?

If that's the other other club, than I'm part of the other other other club. That's the one that accidentally goes out for a ride and doesn't check that both wheels are spinning freely beforehand, think you are fighting the wind the whole way out, turn around, think you are still fighting the wind, get back from your ride, check your wheels, and the rear is rubbing snug against the brake pad. THat was me last Monday. Made my pace about 16.5 mph where I normally average closer to 20. Not fun let me tell ya. I was getting all PO'd. I tried doing some sprints to get my speed up and could only muster like 21 mph. That'll learn me = )

I thought that was "the club", of which I am also a member in good standing!

Funny, the whole time I was changing out the tube I kept thinking about the scene from the Christmas Story where Ralphie was helping his dad change the tire. "Ohhhhhh fuuuddggge, only I didn't say fudge."

And for those "speed demons" in the pits out there, try doing this under a low-light sodium vapor street lamp at 4:30 in the morning!!

I thought when I read the post the "other club" was that you hit someone on a bike with your car........

I am a member in long standing with the "other" club. In fact, I even learned this year that it is possible to flatten a tube in a race (right out of T1, mind you), change it and keep going, although I was really tempted to throw my bike in the lake and be done with it. I chalked it up to mental training. Bleh.

Hey, and grandhavenbill, if you can change a tube at 4:30 in the morning, you can totally do it in a race. Welcome to the "other" club!

what about the club where you're riding down a steep hill and can't figure out why you aren't slowing enough? then the next time you go to take your front tire off to put it on the bike rack... you realize you didn't close the front brake release... yes I did that ... once...

Back to the original topic.

Last year when I got my new bike, I hit a ppothole and blew both tires simultaneously.

I didn't want to waste time on the road, since I was only a mile from home, so I just took off my shoes and walked my bike home.

There's the leaving T2 with your helmet still on club.  I saw a lot of this at St. Anthony this year because when we were done the bulk of the people leaving T2 were in the novice devision.
