Subject: Wetsuit fit questions

I bought a 2007 QR Superfull XL wetsuit after my local shop offered me a deal on it because the other suit I wanted was sold out in my size.

The store is just far enough away from home that I had a friend of mine that was going there anyway pickup the suit for me.

The legs fit better than any suit I have had on.  The different cut on the bottom of the legs really makes it easy to get my size 14 feet into and more importantly out of the suit.   The fit of the lower end of the suit seems perfect.  No wrinkles behind the knees, and all nice and snug.

The torso length of the suit seems good.

The neck seems really tight.  Almost uncomfortably tight.  But there is no movement when I turn my head, so this may help prevent chafing.  How do you know if it is too tight around the neck?

The shoulders and underarms are awesome feeling.  Tight and wrinkle free, yet it has to be the easiest suit to move my arms in the swimming motion that I have ever had on.  I really think this suit would allow a nice swim stoke.

What I think may be the biggest problem is the wrists.  The arms are tight fitting down just past the elbow.  But the wrists seem too loose.  As I rotate my forearm my wrist turns inside the suit easily.   I've never seen a suit with wrists this big.  I'm concerned they might become water scoops while swimming.   Is there any reason that the wrists are supposed to be bigger on this suit?

The suit feels awesome to wear, and is really flexible.  Definately one of the more comfortable suits I have had on.  No wrinkles or air pockets behind the knees, in the armpits, or at the elbows.  t.

That said:
I think I should return the wetsuit because of the wrist issue, if not for the neck issue.
Thoughts?

although I don't own a wetsuit (yet) here is my comment.

would you keep any other article of gear or clothing if it didn't fit as expected or you don't feel comfortable with (neck too tight, choking)?

I don't have any specific answers but I will add that different manufacturers have different "fits" to them.  Some may have a less restrictive neck line than others, same with arm and leg cuffs.

The reason for a snug neck line is so that the water does not go into the suit as you go through the water.  If it does not restrict your breathing or chafe, then it should be okay.

Did you put it on totally dry??  I mean you and the suit ....... the suit will stretch and fit better when it has been wet.  Run a search in the forums for the posts by Emilio (Desoto) on wetsuit maint. and care.  It's pretty cool when a former pro and owner of the company comes on to the site to give you pointers and one on one help.  Which is one of the (many) reasons I use his suit.

I did put the suit on dry.  I was dry, so was the suit.

The neck is not the reason I am considering returning the suit.  It's tighter than others I have tried, but might be OK.  It seems the neck is higher than the others too.  That might be part of the different feel.

No one commented on the "loose around the wrists" issue?  Is there any reason you would want this?

And at 6'5" tall, 245 pounds, size 14 is not unreasonable for a shoe size.

I would not want a suit that is loose around the wrist for the same reason of having a snug neck line.  Every time you extend for your catch you'd get water into the sleeve .... not a good thing in my opinion!

Did you try on any of the Desoto T1 suits?  You can mix/match the sizing for the top or bottom to better fit your shape.

Wet suits are not designed to fit well on dry land.  Go to a pool and see how it feels.

You can't use the wetsuit in a chlorinated pool, can you?

Not an expert but from what I read you can just don't do it alot and make sure you clean it after.  According to the manufacturer of mine, it CAN void the warranty but I think you have to do it alot.

Don't fret.  There's something in the water where I grew up.  I am literally the smallist kid from my block.  The next smallest guy is 2 inches taller and 120 lbs heavier than I am.

I called and talked to the store I bought it from about the issue.  They too thought it was odd, but were obviously willing to help me into a suit that would fit properly.  After our discussion I decided to try the suit on again this morning to take a closer look at the fit, specifically the questions the shop was asking regarding fit.  They seemed certain that I wasn't pulling the sleeves up high enough, but I didn't have any air gap between the suit and my underarms so I didn't think this was possible.

Sure enough, I got the suit on, no airgaps under the arms and wrists were loose.  But the wrists were farther down my arms than the store said they should be.  I pulled the arms up farther, working the wrinkles up the arms until they were at the shoulder armpit area of the suit.  Now the wrists were snug, but I had wrinkles at the shoulders.  I was about to take the suit off and admit it didn't fit, but decided to mimic a swimming motion for a few strokes and the shoulder wrinkles disappeared.  I actually think this suit might fit properly after all.  I kinda feel dumb about yesterday though.

The material of this suit is so soft and flexible compared to any other suit I have had on, I think it is even more important to get the suit on the body correctly.   It's not as obvious when it is on wrong.

Pulling the arms up farther even helped with the tight neck issue.   The suit stretched so much that there were no air gaps even though I didn't have the arms pulled up all the way.

Oh well, live and learn.  I'm going to try putting it on one more time, and talk to the store that I bought it from before I decide I will keep it for certain.
