Hi

I also use an air compressor w/ and adaptor - usually keep mine about 115 - like the ride better - i did not need the extra weight work out trying to pump up the tires! Good arm workout if you don't have weights handy!

From my experience, it depends on the person and the pump.  My old floor pump is much harder to get up to 120.  Nancy really couldn't do it.  With the new one (taller therefore more air in the cylinder) she doesn't have quite the issue when she pumps up my tires.

I normally ride 120 and it's funny watching her jump on the pump.  She tried once to pump up my zipps (160#) I have never laughed so hard in my life.  And since you have to pump your tires up before every ride, perhaps you should get a better pump.  Assuming you have an old one.

Dan's "taller pump" comment also reminded me to add this: I don't pull the pump all the way up when pumping my tires. I literally bring it up about 4 inches, so I don't have to push down very much...perhaps that makes it a little easier for me when I get to higher pressure. You might want to try that too.

Looks like I have a few things to try today!

I guess I could gain 50 pounds and then I wouldn't have to worry about it.

Just another thought---you don't have to pump your tubes to max PSI. It is good to do that for races because the wheels have less rolling resistance, but it gives a pretty bumpy ride. You can always go down to the lower end of the range in training

I have a race tomorrow, so I'm glad I asked this a little early!

OK, I just read this thread for the first time now.

After reading Lauren's comment that "I never knew strength could be an issue with pumping" and AB's comment about a "small diameter pump" I became convinced the thread had taken a... how shall I say?... "racy" turn filled with veiled references and double entendres.

If you're looking for a little cheap entertainment, go back and read the thread with that in mind. I think you'll find it worth your while.

(Guess you'll also get a pretty vivid idea of what goes on inside my head, too!)

wendypow - 2007-06-07 5:34 PM My tires say 120 psi. However, to even get them to 100 I have to practically jump up and down on the floor pump handle, and even then it won't get above 100! If anyone is watching me while doing this, they're getting quite the interesting show! We bought an air compressor, but I don't have a bike tire fitting thingie for it (yet). What does everyone else do?

Do some core work to enable proper pump usage?

They also make pumps that you can operate with your foot.

I have the same problem with a brand-new tire poump!  I'm gonna try deflating my tires a bit first -- thanks for posting!
