Finally got my orthotics in today....so far I'm not sure what to think so I'd love to hear from some of you who have them and like them.  They are super uncomfortable.  I mentioned that to the dr. and he said that's good...because it would be a waste to go through all that work to have everything feel exactly the same.  But they're really hurting my feet.  My arches are aching.  If I leave the laces loose then I feel like my heel is sliding around because it can't sink deep enough into the shoe anymore.  When I tried to tie them tightly the top of my feet went numb.  I'm supposed to be wearing them for 2 hours today to start breaking them in, but after an hour I absolutely had to get them off because it hurt.  The dr. said that they can be adjusted but he wants me to spend a full week breakng them in first before any adjustments are done.  I'm supposed to do an hour more with them every day so starting today with 2, tomorrow 3, etc. until next friday.  So...for those of you who have done this...is it normal for it to really hurt the first day?

It took a while to get accustommed to them, but now I can't go anywhere without my orthotics.

I got my orthotics a month or so ago and was told the same thing as you. Wear for 2 hrs, 3, etc to get used to them.

I started out putting them in my dress shoes and my feet ACHED when I wore them. Loosening the laces helped, but it took me a couple weeks before I was able to wear them for a full day.

I have yet to wear them in my running shoes as I don't want my toes to rub. I'll bring the orthotics when I buy my next pair of shoes.

I got these on the recommendation of my coach. I've got extremely flat feet and have had no leg/feet/ankle issues to date. I'm still not convinced I made the right decision but she insists I won't regret it.

Gotta get used to 'em.. They're putting your foot in a position it hasn't been in before.. Think using aero-bars when you've only used the drop-handles on your bike.. That's the best analogy I can come up with.. Such a minor adjustment in your shoe makes an enormous difference in leg-position....

It didn't take long to get used to running with mine.. The first 3 or 4 runs felt very weird.. But when it felt right, it felt great and my knee-pain (the reason I got fitted for them) was gone for good...

Good luck with your new orthodics!

I find I have to be pickier about shoe selection.  I end up not being able to wear some shoes because of the heel lifting.  But what helped was to take out the insole that is in the shoe, put the orthotic all the way on the bottom, and lay a spenco insert (they are green...most running shoe stores have them) on top.  So you still have cushioning but the orthotic fits on the bottom of the shoe better without the shoe's original insert...

I actually couldn't wear my orthotics until my flat feet got so bad that I got tendonitis on the inside of my ankle from my feet falling inwards with no support. My podiatrist taped my feet to support my arch and take the pressure off of the tendon, and I was able to get used to the orthotics by wearing them WITH the tape for about a week. You might want to ask your doctor about that and see if he would recommend it for your situation.

I had the problem with the heel coming out, too.  I tied my running shoes this way, and it helped a ton.

Yep I use the orthotic for work shoes and then I run with Saucony Hurricane 8's for my "funny feet"

It does take a while to get use to em but your feet and gait will thank you...

Been there done that, I also take out the insole that comes in most shoes.  They fit in some of my dress shoes and not in others.  I always were them when I'm buying new shoes.  It does take time to get use to them.  I didn't run in mine for about a month after I had them.  Build up slowly.  I suffered from shin splints, now they are gone.  I ran a 2:20 today for 18 miles.  My speed has picked up and I'm no longer suffering.  Stick with it, you won't regret it in the end.

Yes, mine felt like walking on rocks when I first got them.

My guy had me wear them in my shoes for just 30 minutes a day at first, and then work up to an hour, and then two hours. THEN I got to wear them while running.

And YES, my feet DID hurt at first. When you take them off, massage you aches and maybe rub some soothing creme on you feet. (The Body Shop makes a really nice Peppermint Intensive Foot Rescue creme that is just divine, esp if you have someone else run it on! )
