We bought a new car yesterday, and now need to sell my old car.  CarMax does appraisals, and then makes you an offer on the car, some percentage of the appraisal, no doubt.  I was wondering if anyone has done this... any thoughts appreciated.

In the last 6 months, I have sold two cars to CarMax, and was VERY pleased with the experience.  You do not get full retail, but you typically get a good bit more than "trade-in".  I loved it because I did not have to deal with the newspaper ad, tire-kickers, etc, etc.

Just FYI, I took both of my vehicles to car dealerships first, just so I could get good comparison numbers.  The delaership offered:

$14,500 for my 2003 Expedition and $15,000 for my 2004 Yukon XL.  CarMax gave me $17,000 and $18,000; no hassles, and the whole process took a couple hours.

I sold my car to CarMax a couple years ago - no problems at all, got a good price on it and it couldn't have been easier.  It does take a little while for them to do the appraisal, so you might want to go and get lunch rather than sitting around the dealership, and if I recall correctly, it then takes some time to cut the check (I think I ended up going back a day or two later to pick it up - it might have just been that I couldn't get back the same day cause of other obligations.)
