Subject: Sleeveless wetsuit?
Considering puchasing the Blue Seventy/Ironman Sleeveless wetsuit. Felt great in the store, haven't tried wet yet. I'm doing a sprint tri (800m swim) in July in pretty cold water and have been hearing from many athletes that I should purchase a wet suit.

I think I'd feel more comfortable in a sleeveless suit, but want to see if anyone out there has any input on sleeveless vs. sleeves. Thanks.

Mine is a sleeveless QR, full leg length, and I do sprints, and I think it awesome. I tried on my sisters long sleeve one, and didn't feel all that comfortable in it, felt cumbersome.

That's my opinion, but I don't know how cold of water you will be swimming in? Here in Chicago, I usually wait until Lake Michigan warms up, to above 63 degrees, since I'm a wuss.

Good Luck with your survey! I'll be interested to hear what everyone thinks!

NY in July shouldn't be terrible. I heard the water where the race is located is typically chilly, but plenty of people go without a wetsuit as well, so it can't be that bad!

I think the sleeveless will allow me to get the suit off faster. I'm partly purchasing the wetsuit to be a little quicker in the water... I wouldn't want to slow down in the transition by not being able to get my suit off!

Thanks for your input.

I don't like sleeves in general and swim in sleeveless Xterra, even once in 54 degrees/Pacific Ocean in March.  Did 800m yesterday in a race, 62 degrees, and was fine.  Some basic moisturizer helps keep me just a bit warmer when necessary, and a quick swim before the race helps too so the race start dive isn't a shock.  I know there are arguments for more neoprene = more speed, but I asked my coach to evaluate the sleeve/no sleeve issue based on my own swim ability (relatively strong), tendency to get hot, and dislike of sleeves, and he agreed that sleeveless for me seemed best.

lot of factors, but I think the two main issues to consider are distance and water temps.

I've got the IM sleeveless and love it. I've swam a HIM in 60 degree water (w/  neoprene cap) and was fine.  Most of my swims are  HIM distance or less in low-mid 70's water. So it works for me.

Gave up a little buoyancy, to save some time in transition and money in my wallet.

If I were crazy enough to consider an IM I may want a full.

TriLI - 2007-06-11 3:21 PM NY in July shouldn't be terrible.

Even the Great Lakes aren't that cold in July. Where are you racing?

NY - I'm not concerned with temp of water. I honestly don't know what temps it'd be - but nothing that I couldn't swim in w/out a suit.
