I just signed up for the 2004 Chicago Triathlon. After I hit submit, I noticed a question about being a clydesdale. Being 255 now (I just make the cutt off), and not planning on being able to drop 56 lbs before the race, is it a big deal to switch my registration over to "clydesdale" or should I just go with wichever heat they throw me in?

Email the race director and tell him that you really want to be in the Cydesdale class and they may just work it out for you!

whats the cut off wieght? I'm 226 now which is large for a 5'8 person but come race time I should be 170 to 190. still large but not exactly streamline!

I am guilty of being one of those Clydesdales too! I don’t think I will ever get below 200 pounds. If I ever do I will be one skinny 200 pounder!

It depends from race to race, but many of them consider a clydesdale to be 201+ and I am not sure about the athena div.

I am definitely a Clydesdale and always will be. It's a good way to compare yourself to others by being in the Clydesdale category, but is not essential. I have actually changed to the Clydesdale category on race day once so you should have no problem switching.

Be careful about not getting too gung ho about the whole Clydesdale 'movement' that some are trying to push. Some have a questionable agenda. Just look at it like this - "hey, cool, a category for heavy guys" and leave it at that.

That being said, I love to enter races with the Clyde cat. Why not try to place in the 'fat guy' category instead of being a "middle of the packer" with the lightweights?
