So... What's in your bag? I know I am starting to overthink things right now, but I am wondering what others are putting in their bags. My tri coach suggested that I not put in a lot (if any) nutritional stuff, especially stuff thay are handing out at the aid stations. He said I should put in stuff that will motivate me to finish the last half of the run.
I am still up in the air about what to put in, but I am thinking about another pair of running shoes. I know in my half IM my shoes were soaked from the sponges they were handing out. So far that's what I have. What about you?

I thought about another pair of socks at least.  However, remember that we are going to be running in a very low humidity climate, so the sweat that you produce dries right up.  It shouldn't have a chance to roll down to your feet.  I will wear a different pair of socks for the bike and the run, though.

I figured that I would put a couple bottles of my chosen sports drink for the bike, along with some gels or maybe bananas or sweet salty potatoes.  For the run, maybe just a photo of me crossing the finish line at my Half...

For the run I'll have socks in a ziplock with BlisterShield power inside them.  I had a big problem last year with hotspots during the ride and very large blisters during the run.   A longsleeve Coolmax shirt in case it is a cool night.  Since I'll only be taking liquid nutrition during the race I may add a couple of Clif bars and a can of Starbucks Double Shot for comfort.  The plan is to not use any of it unless necessary.

In the bike bag will be 2 CO2s, 2 tubes and 1 bottle of nutrition in case I unknowingly launch one of the two bottles I start out with.  I don't plan on stopping for the bike bag either unless I need to.

I like to think of Special Needs bags as "emergency use only" bags. So I put back up supplies of things I already have in case I lose them during the race.

Also, be sure you're going to get them back before putting anything of value in them. At Canada, they don't return them to you after the race, so anything you don't take is gone. I think Canada is unique in this way because the course is not loops and the logistics of packing the bags and returning them to the race start/finish is an issue.

Anyway, here's what I put in mine:

Bike - A spare container of electrolyte tabs; a couple of gels; a breakfast cookie; a couple of CO2 cannisters.

Run - A long sleeve shirt; spare container of electrolyte tabs, a couple of gels; a container with immodium, tums, and ibuprofen in it.

In my first IM I ate the cookie from the bike bag and skipped the run bag. I didn't use either bag in my second one.

It is the special needs bag that you get at the half way point of the bike and on the run. You can put in what you need that isn't offered on the course. They give you the bag before the race and at some point you give it back and they have it ready for you during the race.

When I registered they gave me four bags:

Swim to bike

Bike special needs

Bike to run

Run special needs

I’m not normally well organized and it helped me to create lists in Excel and tape them to the bags.  I also had a list for ‘on the bike’.

Gary, you won't believe the organization at Lake Placid.  They have all the intermediate bags for the 2nd half of the run and the transition bags all sorted out by race number.  On the run, at the 1/2 way point, they have a guy 100 yards down the road who spots your number and radios ahead to the crew.  Someone locates your bag from the sorted rows and by the time you get there, someone is holding your bag out for you to grab as you run by.  There are several porta-potties at that point too, if you need to use them or go inside to change clothes.  Even after the swim and bike, all your stuff you remove in the changing tent is placed into a bag with your number on it, and then those bags are sorted into rows so you can locate everything after the race.  None of this "standing around on a towel at your bike rack" sort of situation like in an average race.  Trust me, these people at Lake Placid have this down to an exact science.  Your triathlon transistions will never seem the same after you compete in this event!

I had a PB&J in my bag, along with some dried friut, honey salted nuts and some Gummi bears ( comfort food). Also a ziploc bag with some baby wipes in case you need to use the bathrooms. Besides the baby wipes the only thing I really needed was the PB&J. Just to put something of substance in my stomach to mix with all the salt pills and gatorade i was taking in. Other than that there are as many aid stations on the course as you could ever hope for.

And I too was impressed by the volunteers in Lake Placid!!!! Many thanks to them.

You should have gotten 5 bags...the ones you mentioned and a dry clothes bag.  You use this one to put the stuff you wear to transition in the morning in and pick it up after the race.
