Do you have seperate race wheels and training wheels? What about the tires?

When not using your race wheels/tires, do you deflate the tires (i've seen people deflating tires after races)?

My race wheels never leave my tri bike. I kept the stock wheels, even bought an extra cassette, thinking I would switch them out and only use the race wheels on race day, but never have switched them.

But then, I do 80% of my training on my road bike...

Can't see any rationale for deflating tires. Maybe if they're going to be in a hot car, but not just because they will be idle.

They'll deflate on their own over time, so if you are only using them every month or two you have to pump them up anyways.  As Bear said, it's only an issue in a really hot car.

But I do switch them out unless I know there is another race coming up soon and put the beater/stock wheels back on.

I have separate racing and training wheels - I use the racing wheels for racing and one or two rides pre-race and the rest of the time my training wheels are on. I don't deflate the wheels but I make sure I keep them out of direct sunlight (not supposed to be good for the glue) and away from sources of heat.

One thing to keep in mind about Bear's statement is that not only does he do the majority of training on his road bike, but he also has one of the most bombproof set of racing wheels in existence (IIRC), a Hed3 and a disc. This setup is pretty much indestructible so everyday use is less of an issue than with spoked race wheels.

I ride with lots of sharp things on the road and have had plent of flats.  My race wheels stay safe in the garage until race day.  Training wheels dont have to be expensive.  My training wheels also have tires for puncture resistance, not speed.

For me I've given up that this is a low cost sport.  You are going to keep spending $ to ride.

Oh, i think (and my husband and my bank account) have already figured out that there is nothing "cheap" about cycling products. Even if you try, you end up having to buy the 'real" thing anyway!
