Subject: Hey and stuff
I've been training for my first sprint triathlon for about 6 weeks now. My first race will be October 10th; the Texas Man Sprint. Of course my wife knows I'm training for this, but I've only told a couple of other people. I kind of wanted to keep it low key until I actually finished one, if that makes any sense. Just to show a level of commitment, I guess.

Before beginning training for this, I was a pretty regular gym guy, lifting weights and running. I also had a background from high school club swim team. One of my friends began toying with the idea of training for a triathlon, and of course the competitive side of me told me to go for it. Now it looks like I'll be completing my first race before he even has one lined up.

It's been a big money investment initially, but I think one that's well worth it. I bought a very entry level road bike, a Raleigh Grand Sport. Just got my clipless pedals a yesterday and went for my first ride with them today. Not too bad, but will take awhile till I get comfortable in them. I've also ordered a pair of aerobars (profile century--entry level). I'm anxious to find out how that will affect my handling and riding.

I'm looking forward to getting involved with this online community and hopefully find a couple of local people to connect with.

First, Welcome to the Site!!!

i am sure you will benefit from the site. i hope you will also participate in sharing your knowledge as well. i know i always need any kind of tip on the disciplines, especially the swim part.

i recently bought a bike also. i have always ridden mountain bikes, so it is a big adjustment going to a tri-bike. i love the clippless pedals although it takes getting use to. the aerobars are great even though i haven't completely gotten 100% control of the bike as i would like yet.

anyway, WELCOME!!!

Welcome.  You have a plan and a goal...I'm sure you'll do fine.

The aero bars will add 1 - 2 mph to your average speed...that's what I've found.

Plano, TX - that's where Lance Armstrong started his pro triathlete career at age 16.  That was before he became a pro cyclist a few years later.

Welcome Seb! Perhaps I will see you at the Tri on Oct. 10th. I will be doing the Karen Smyers Sprint Tri (it starts 15 min. after the men's race). I'm a little nervous about this one because it is a mass start rather than a wave start. Not sure about taking off with so many people, but it should still be a blast!

yeah, I'm nervous about the mass start too, but it looks like they're limiting it to 400 participants. But still, that's a lot of bodies running into the water at once
