Subject: Off road tri - mtn bike tire pressure
This Saturday will be my 10th tri (5th this year), but first ever X-tri (1,000m swim, 20k mtn bike, 4m trail run). I've done the track with my mtn bike but had 65lbs of air in the tire which felt like way too much.

Does anyone know the proper psi of air for this type of event?

Thanks so much - have a great week/weekend everyone!

John

depends on the course, the bike,  rider weight, tire size, and a few other things

Generally, for me at 200+ pounds, on a Fuel, running 2.3 Continential vertical Pro's on a mixed (some rocks, some clay) course I'll run 40-42 lbs

65 pounds is way too much for anything but asphalt

It really depends on what you want for a "feel".  I weigh 165ish so I run my tires at 35-37psi.  Im  on 26X1.95 tires and have a hard tail.  My friend runs his at 42psi but hes heavier, full suspension and running 26X2.3 tires.  Good luck!

Pick up this month's Triathlete magazine...they have an article on this. Basically, it said you'll go fastest running the lowest pressure you can without pinch flatting.

dirt is different that asphault. With the road you want as little of your tire as possible touching the ground to reduce rolling resistance, hence higher pressure.  On dirt you want plenty of contact so you can grip the dirt and you don't spin out.   I'd say 30-40 would be a good balance.    If it is hardpack, you can go a little higher,  Gravel, or sand, go a little lower for more grip.

Thanks, great responses. 6'0, 160 lbs, will go with about 37-40-ish and see what happens.

I tend to like them a bit harder.  I read the article referenced but my limited experience has me lean toward a bit harder pressure.  I run about 45 for a dry, hard track.  I do skid a bit there but for me that's ok.

I'm jealous, I got into this sport thinking I would be doing those races but they quit doing them in MN after my first one.

reading all of these suggestions it really looks like its "rider's choice" and you have to find your own happy place.  for me I love to ride with 55 pounds up front and 60 out back.  but at 220 and with a soft-tail I enjoy a little over-steer in the corners downhill.  for climbing my pressures aren't the best.  if i know i'll be doing A LOT of climbing I'll drop the front to 40 and the rear to 45.  that's as low as my tubes should ever be to save the pinch flats.  if you're running tubeless you can get away with almost 25 pounds per tire!
