Hi every one, my name is Tim Edwards. Next summer I will be turning 40, and I have decided to mark the occasion by competing in a sprint triathlon one year from today. I gather from some of the comments I have read that a lot of triathletes dread the swim. I am already an regular and fairly decent swimmer, but I am a reluctant runner, and I haven't even been on a bike in about 6 years. I am really excited to have found this website.

Hi Tim and welcome.  I'm in a similar situation...decided to tri next season.  Do you think you can wait that long?  I read everyone's race reports and stories of their experiences and just want to get out there and tri.

There is a lot of info on this site and if you can't find what you need...just ask.

Welcome Tim,

I'm a couple of years older than you, but have the same idea. I did my 1st tri with about 6 weeks of prep, so completing a sprint (or 2) next year is definitely achievable. Good luck

A big welcome! You've got more than enough time to train. That's great that you are a decent swimmer. The running and biking will come over time. Good luck!

Welcome Tim! I'm envious of your swimming experience - that's my weakest leg for sure. You'll get the hang of running and cycling no problem. Best of luck in your training!

Wow! I'm really impressed with the supportive atmosphere on this site! Thanks to everyone.

I had a reality check over the weekend. My target race is 800m/20mi/4mi. I am hoping to finish in under 2 hours. I hit the gym to establish a base line.

Swim 19 minutes, SPL 23 - not bad
Stationary Bike - 18 mph pace is not too hard - can I keep it going for > 1 hr?
Run - wow, 10 min/mile is a lot faster than I remember. Could only maintain the pace for 1/2 mile. 12 min/mile is more comfortable.

Question: What is a reasonable guesstimate for T1/T2 time?

I'm not giving up on my goal, but I've clearly got my work cut out for me.

I thought about including a quote like "The older I get the faster I was", but I'm going to stay positive and sign off with

"One's reach should always exceed one's grasp."

Hi Tim, welcome, I am a newbie here as well, one thing iI have done is look at a target triathlon I am going to do and then look at the previous results, take them and get an idea (slowest-fastest in or out of age group)...you can get an idea from there on times and such.
I am super envious of your swimming...I need much work... One thing I have learned about endurance running/biking is that you can build endurance by running longer slower without getting fatigued.. and then work in speed drills to speed you up a bit..there are many plans out there..look at running websites they have very runspecific plans, and check out

Ron has put up some nice starter programs that will get you going.

Nice start on your tri training....

Tri hard train safe...

It looks like you are on your way. You know where you are at now and where you would like to be. You have tonnes of time before next September to improve. Just make your training appropriate to the course you've selected. i.e. - don't burn up the flat land time trial loop if your race course has lots of hill, etc. You'll do just fine.
