My left arch has been giving me an occasional twinge over the last week.  Yesterday, during a 6 mile run, it hurt several times.  Today it is tweaked.  Any ideas as to what it is?  Does anyone know a treatment/prevention?

plantar fasciaitis (sp?), maybe?

hamstring stretching is good prevention. Ice it often to remove inflammation. If it advances there are orthodic inserts, PT, etc.

I struggled with it for about 5 years and finally got a surgery. They went in with a scope and nipped the lantar fasia (like a wide rubber band from heal to ball of the foot) part way across to allow it to relax. I walked out or the hospital with less pain than walking in!

That is just a guess based on what I am familiar with, but many running friends have had this same problem (few had to have surgery). If it keeps up, look around for a good podiatrist.

Thanks, Mary.  Obvious question, but do you know if it gets worse with use?  Will rest make it better?

Yes, use makes it worse - inflamming an already inflamed spot. But inactivity over time will add to it. I was in a viciuos cycle with it - the more it hurt, the less I exercised, the more weight I gained, the more pressure that was on it, the more it hurt......

If it stays for a week, get to a doc!

Mary,
I am gld the surgery worked for you, my wife wasn't as lucky. She dealt w/ PF for about 4 years then opted for the surgery. She had complications, stress fractures in her feet shortly after and the surgery was a complete failure. She is still dealing w/ it a little, although it is much better then before. She found a great Physical Therapist that has worked wonders on her feet. The PT has told my wife that she probably didn't need surgery just the correct treatment and properly measured / fitted orthotocs. So anyone reading this thread, please use the surgery route as a last resort for PF.

Well there is my 2 cents worth.

Adios
Dave

I totally agree that surgery is a last resort (in about everything medical!) and to research your surgeon and the particular proceedure very carefully! I canceled with someone who wanted to totally take my foot apart and opted for a less intrusive proceedure.

Really sorry your wife's surgery did not go well!
