So that old "fogies" (people in their 30's and up) can give me $hit for being 25 when they pass me saying "I should be able to do this hungover!"

In the off road Tri I did a few weeks back, we wore our number on our right arm and our age group on the back of our right leg, you always knew how old the person was you were passing (or getting passed by).

No kidding - why go out of your way to "scrub it off" - I'm considering using my next one as the trace for a tattoo!

Its to make the new folks realize that in this sport they'll still get schooled by those older then them...

My first tri I figured youth would help me out. Our age was written our calf, I was 21 and as I biked the 25 mile course I was passed by more 42 year olds then I care to mention.

You need the numbers so you can see if the person in front of you is in your AG group and you can hunt them down...Just kiddin',,,kindof

Chris

No kidding to me -- I'll be the first to admit I'm competitive. I'm constantly checking the AG numbers on legs during my races.

So if a shark tries to make off with someone's arm, they know who it belongs to.

You're suppose to take them off afterwards?????

I agree. I made no special effort to take mine off after my first tri. Badge of honor.

According to another thread from today, the purpose of body marking is to hit on hottie volunteers.

I do a race in March that uses them for transition. When you get out of the pool, someone radios to transition that you are coming. The people in transition then grab your bag of stuff which also has your number on it (this transition area is enormous and split into two sections) and hand it to you as you run by. It's very handy and works like a charm - I always think of it as a really advanced coat-check system
