I am new to this whole biking thing and decided to do the MS150. Needing to get as much riding in as possible, I now have a new cycleops fluid trainer. To those of you who use one of these, let me ask you a question. My computer on my bike is basic so it does not have cadence on it. The magnet is on the front wheel for speed/distance. So when i am on the trainer I have no idea how far or fast I am going. What does everyone else do? Just jump on it for a set time? Put the magnet on the rear wheel? Thanks for any info!!!

I just ride for a set time.  I have thought about getting another cheap computer that I can attach to my rear wheel so I will get a speed and distance reading.  But will it really be accurate anyway.  I mean will the effort it takes to ride in say 52x12 be the same on the trainer as on the road.  At the end of the day all that matters is time and effort - your body doesn't understand distance.

I have the sensor on my rear wheel & I can tell you that it won't be accurate anyway since like tridantri said, you can't push the same gear on the trainer that you can on the road. Maybe someone with a power meter can chime in, but that should be comparable right? It shouldn't matter whether you are on the trainer or the road, your watts is your watts. Of course you still won't know how fast/far you have gone...

Thanks for the info... I might move the sensor to the rear wheel. If nothing else it will help me keep a constant speed on the trainer. I assume that the magnet on the wheel has to be placed a certain distance from the hub to make sure milage is accurate when on the road...Any thoughts on this? Sorry big noob here!!

It doesn't matter where the magnet is placed as long as it passes close enough to the pick-up to register. It is the size of the wheel which determines the speed so you have to make sure that the actual bike computer (readout) is set to the correct tire size. This is usually something that's done during the initial setup.
