sorry for all my newbie posts . .

i just took a swim lesson today and one thing the instructor suggested was to swim in "intervals" instead of just doing a distance. i've been trying to get my distance up for a sprint in a couple weeks (1/2 mile) so i've just been swimming blocks of 300 or 450 yds.

what sorts of workouts do you do? like , 10 x 100 yds? or something, with drills?

i'd just work on building your distance up so you can do the distance comfortably; this will build your confidence. how soon is your tri?

one good way to build endurance is do ladders. you start with say 25m, take a set break, then 50m same break and so on up to a certain distance and then back.

after your first tri then i'd work on drills, intervals etc. how many times a week are you swimming? how may lessons etc?

and no need to apologise for the posts!

ok i've just read your logs! maybe if you want to build distance and comfort do say one length drill and one length normal swim. this is a great way to incorporate what you are learning into your actual stroke.

oh and if you are struggling with distance do you have a rescue stroke? breast/side stroke?

is it a pool swim or ows? if the latter get some practice in!

thanks for the tips!

i have been swimming about 4 or 5 days a week, for the last couple weeks - and yesterday (as you may have seen) i swam 600 yds w/o stopping. the only reason i'm doing the distance and not just working on form is to get my confidence up for the sprint.
i have taken one lesson - this morning - and i haven't gotten a chance to practice what i learned (aside from at lesson), i'll swim tommarow morning and try the techniques. i felt like i got quite a bit out of the lesson though.
my sprint is on july 29th, so 2 weeks. i have been working out a lot for the last 2 months - trying to get into shape. the swim is OWS - and is a 1/2 mile, or about 880 yds. i'm going to go out to the lake this week (if my roomate will come with) and practice in open water - that should help

any tips?
thanks!

yeh: practice your sighting. see other threads for tips on this. erm...don't panic! and that's it. oh make sure you have a sighter (ie roomie) and wear a bright cap!

getting to 600 so far is good. i am sure you'll be fine.

Check out the book "Swim Workouts in a Binder for Triathletes".  It's bound in a ring and waterproof so you can leave it next to the pool while you swim.
