XXX (x3)

Can't emphasize dedicated running store enough ... do not buy running shoes from anyplace ending in Locker, Mart, Authority, Chalet, etc. They do not have the expertise to fit you correctly.

In addition to my full-time day job I work a couple of nights a week at Sports Authority (golf and outdoors). Management puts the biggest idiots in footwear. The tools that work at my location are unbelievably stupid and lazy. PLEASE do not go to the aforementioned Locker, Mart, Authority, Chalet etc. I still patronize a LRS as my tri club discount there is the same as my employee discount at Sports Authority.

After too many bouts of shin splints, I headed to local running specialty store. The shoes I had been running in (brooks) were made for overpronation...opps! I underpronate pretty badly (need surgery to remove 2x small extra bones on outside of feet). Anyway-I am now happily running in Mizuno Wave Riders. Along w/new sneaks and mostly running on grass/dirt, my shins are happy!

So, to repeat what has been said-go to local specialty store!

The only advice I have is go to a dedicated running store that has a good return policy (most good stores do) and have them analyze your gait, whether you pronate/supinate, etc.  A shoe that works for one person may not work for another, and it may in fact take 3-4 different brands/models before you find one that works for you (hence the need for a return policy)

Chris

I agree with Chris.  When I started running I had been buying my shoes from sporting goods stores and Wal-Mart.  My knees were killing me when I ran.  Someone suggested I go to the local running store and get some jump straps.  I went and the owner asked me what I needed them for.  When Itold him he asked if I would be interested in some shoes too. At the time I said no but little did I know that I would return in less than 2 weeks for shoes.  He took my shoes that I was currently wearing (after he watched me run) and told me that I over-pronate.  Told me to try this style of shoe (and showed me what to look for).  I bought the shoe and while me knees still hurt it wasn't as severe and my feet didn't hurt at all.  Within time my knees became stronger and I no longer wear the jump straps.  I now buy MOST of my running shoes there but occassionally I will buy them somewhere else if I see the RIGHT shoe for the RIGHT price!!

I wear Asics Gel Landreth. It's a stiff, lightweight, neutral trainer. They took a long time to break in. Frown But I do like them. Will wear them this weekend @ Racine. I'll know better how they hold up over the long haul then. The longest run I've worn them for has been 11 miles.

I'm looking for a new running shoe, and I'm curious to know what options are best for triathletes/runners? Is there anything specific that I should look for beyond personal comfort? I usually run outdoors (a lot of pavement, dirt, etc) but I also run indoors on a rubber track in the winter. I've been doing olys, but I want to work up to HIMs within the next year or so.

Any advice for this newbie?

Just go to a good running store that will do a gait analysis, etc., and then test out a lot/all of the shoes they recommend. Asics, Mizuno, Saucony, it doesn't matter...find what works for you!

I love my Asics Kayanos, but they are built for overpronators. Know what you are before you buy!

At the risk of further embarrassment, I thought my input might further drive the point home that you need to have some expert advice when buying shoes. Go to your LRS!!!!

I had been running in a pair of Nikes I bought through a catalog (yes, I know...) - this particular pair fit OK (I thought) and I didn't want to spend the money for a new pair, even though I needed to. And I knew it.

After a 9.5 mile run last Sunday, I got home with three big blisters and some knee pain. I finally had "had it" with those shoes, and went immediately (after showering, of course!) to my LRS. Turns out I was in shoes 1.5 sizes too small, and completely wrong for my stride. Niiice. They validated my hunch that Nikes just aren't built for my foot (and now I know what other shoes to avoid, as well).

I walked out with a pair of Mizuno Wave Riders and noticed a difference in my first run yesterday with them. I paid $90, which is pretty much what I would pay online or at a "discount" store for the same shoes. Instead, I got a personalized fitting with a guarantee that if after a few miles I'm not still happy, I can bring them back for another fitting in another shoe for no extra charge. I'm a convert.

Hope that helps!

LRS for sure. Had tons of knee problems picking my own shoes. Finally got some good advice and The Beast changed my life. Pain went away almost immediately.

amen to the dedicated running store suggestion - bonus if they do gait analysis w/a treadmil camera. patagonia in new york city does that - helps a ton. once you get fitted of course, then you can shop around for price... good luck

i just got asiscs gel kayano's - good for pronaters like me... AND i use an insert on top of that...

Please talk a little more about the Newtons. I am very very interested in picking up a pair after my half ironman for a Marathon in the fall. And perhaps a full next season.

How long did it take you to get used to them?

Do you feel that you have less concussion on the knees and ankles?

Thanks,

Tom

red ink = sarcasm

Newtons marketing claims are yet to be proved and the suggested 'right' form for running, well it isn't necessary valid. (You can do a search and learn why) But there are some who like the shoes and claim they run faster. Others don’t notice anything but only how fast the shoes wear out. And finally others who had experienced injuries, so it is up to you to choose if you want to give’em a try… If my concern was to improve my running *I* would just run more or at the very least wait for the off season to try any new pair of running shoes

Especially any show that claims to alter your body mechanics.  Best part is that you can do what the Newtons claim to do all on your own, without spending that much for a pair of shoes.

Asics makes great shoes in general. I've used the 2100 series shoes for three years now and I love them. 2120's are what I run on right now and they are great.

Definatly get fitted at a running store though.

Ditto the LRS like everyone else , but be sure to take the shoes you've been running in with you. My LRS takes a look at the wear-and-tear patterns and can then make some suggestions based on your current patterns and your in-store running.

Asic DT Trainers and Newton Racers.

I had problems with heal spurs and since I've changed to the Newton Racer I have been able to get back to training again. My 1st race with them will be the 70.3 at the Steelhead.

LOVE the Newtons!!!!
