Subject: What running shoes do you wear/recommend?

I'm looking for a new running shoe, and I'm curious to know what options are best for triathletes/runners? Is there anything specific that I should look for beyond personal comfort? I usually run outdoors (a lot of pavement, dirt, etc) but I also run indoors on a rubber track in the winter. I've been doing olys, but I want to work up to HIMs within the next year or so.

Any advice for this newbie?

The only advice I have is go to a dedicated running store that has a good return policy (most good stores do) and have them analyze your gait, whether you pronate/supinate, etc.  A shoe that works for one person may not work for another, and it may in fact take 3-4 different brands/models before you find one that works for you (hence the need for a return policy)

XXX (x3)

Can't emphasize dedicated running store enough ... do not buy running shoes from anyplace ending in Locker, Mart, Authority, Chalet, etc. They do not have the expertise to fit you correctly.

I love my Asics Gel Nimbus shoes. Running World magazine rated them editrors choice and I ran a marathon in them this Spring and all the training that goes with it without any trouble.

Just my 2 cents.

echo the good running store for them to observe your gait and examine the old shoe for wear pattern, they'll make the best reccomendations for the type shoe you need and pull a few brands for you to try. the best stores have little running areas in them so you cango a few "laps" in store to test them out.

I just got my first ever pair of dedicated running shoes from my local Running Zone. Only go to a dedicated running shop, they know what to look for and will have an excellent return policy. I bought some Mizuno Wave Inspire 3, cost a 100 bucks but SO worth it!!

Mizuno Wave Nirvana 3. Now that I found them, I just keep ordering the new ones online whenever I need to update.

Dedicated running store.

I just got fitted for new shoes, my old shoe company changed the fit of the shoe I was wearing so glad I went in to the LRS instead of ordering online. Now I am sporting new bright white Mizuno Wave Inspire 3 and I love em.

I got good advice in this forum and then bought two more, but different, pairs so I can alternate, give the shoes a rest between runs, and put pressure on my legs in slightly different ways. It has worked great so far. Yeah, it's a bit more expensive up front but the shoes last longer that way and if you train for a HIM I bet you will go through three pairs over the winter anyway.

I have Mizuno Alchemy (my favorite for LSD runs), Mizuno Elixir (very light and great for short runs and racing), and Adidas Supernova Control for the other days (they're the newest pair and seem to be working for me, just haven't worn them that much yet). If I run on trails/dirt I wear my old heavy duty Montrail Hardrock for lots of support.

I know I over pronate from looking at my old shoes and from what an orthopedic surgeon told me years ago when I had sprained my right ankle yet again pretty badly. So, I just ordered the shoes online. Then three weeks ago I "found" our local running store, went in, asked for a gait analysis and it turns out I was right. My next pair I will get from that store to support the service they provide. (I just didn't know they were there until I entered a 5K race and the packet had a coupon for that store in it...)

Good luck finding your dream shoes!

Nothing to lose to try them out.

times like a billion.

I used to always wear the same shoe and buy them two pairs at a time, when I went in to buy them the people at the local shop already had feedback about that shoe not fitting the same, and were able to recommend another  after watching me run on their treadmill.  I drive past quite a few shoes store and 40+min to make sure I always buy from them..

Asics Gel Kayano XIII (or whatever they are up to right now.) -- Long distance (> HIM)

Brooks Racers and Asics Trainers for the shorties. The Brooks are extremely light.

For every person there is a different shoe.

I wear Brooks Beasts, but I am a big guy. I highly recommend getting properly fitted at a running shop. They will get you the right size of the right shoe, and give you several options. I did it and it made a wold of difference for me.

I just bought new shoes last week. After using the Brooks Adrenaline for two full years (about 8 pair of shoes) I decided to try something new.

My running store lets you take the shoes out for a run to see how you like them. I tried on 6 different pairs of shoes and went running in each pair and finally decided to give the Pearl Izumi's a try.

Moral of the story? Try as many as possible, like has been said before, every foot and running style is different.

I agree with what everyone else has said - get thee to a dedicated running store and have them determine what you should be wearing.  Once they determine what shoe type you need, then you can find what feels best to you.  I work at such a store and it amazes me how often people come in and say they have been wearing X model of a shoe, but after we fit them, that model was completely wrong for them, and after getting them the correct type of shoe, they find they don't have pain/soreness when they run.

X infinity on the gait analysis. I had gait analyzed and learned I supinated, and my previous running shoes were stability ahoes. Switched to ASICS Gel Cumulus, a neutral cushioning shoe, and love them. Ran a half mary in them a week and a half after buying them ( be careful doing this ) and they made a HUGE difference.

Purchased shoes from onlineshoes.com for $ 69 with a 90 day return/refund policy because the budget's a wreck; would have liked to have purchased @ lrs, but price difference was pretty large.

kylerboys - 2007-07-15 9:09 PM love my Asics Gel Nimbus too!

Plus one.

Also agree strongly with LRS recommendation. Used to run in another Asics model but last month was changed to Nimbus. Very (positive) noticable difference.
