Subject: Swim Coach
So, what I've learned over the past season so far is that I really need a swim coach. I can hang with the elite when it comes to the bike and the run, but my swim is where I loose it. As for this season I just want to keep making strides of improvements, like everyone, but to take the next step I need to learn how to swim fast. Yet swimming fast entails good form and efficient movement. I’ve never had a swim lesson in my life, but I think that it is time

Has anyone ever had a swim coach or gone to a swim camp? I'm looking for any suggestions and recommendations that anyone has to offer?

Some may disagree with me here, but I think Dave Cameron really helped out my swimming.  He teaches Total Immersion at the YWCA in Minneapolis.  It's not bad for cost, I think $250.00 for 6 lessons.  You can have 1 or 2 people in them.  T.I doesn't completely teach you how to swim fast as it teaches you to conserve energy and improve on technique.  It has helped me to swim 1:45/100's in yesterdays tri.  In the pool I am right around 1:32/100's that I will usually hold for 20 in a row with a 10 second break.  Best 100 was 1:24.

Another suggestion would be to get into a Masters Swim program for the winter. They have coaches that will help you. I know Dave does a good job, but going to the YWCA is inconvinent for me. Here is a link to the list of Masters Swim coaches on the Minnesota Masters site.

Otherwise I ran across this site, but Hopkins isn't convinent either.

Good luck,

I just have to second the Total Immersion packages at the YW.  I did the same thing, although since I preferred the downtown location I met with Jenn Peck and kept the lessons to myself.   I owe everything to her.   However, my experience was different since I couldn't swim a lick when I started.  Here's the web site to learn more:

Dave Cameron is a local swimming living legend.

I don't know where you are located but there are twin brothers that run Storm Swim Club in Lakeville, Prior Lake, and Richfield. I took a 4 week course from them. They had some really good drills and instruction.

Another vote for Dave Cameron here. The favor I've done for myself in terms of my swim skill has been to invest in the coaching and SWIM LOTS. The past couple of months have been a significant increase in time in the pool and I'm noticing big gains in time and efficiency.

Good luck!

Tom

Thanks for all of the ideas! I live in DT MPLS, so any location near the cities is fairly convenient for me. Last winter I did the Masters program at the UofM and it was very helpful and I'm planning to do the same this winter. I think that I need to do a video study to visually see what I'm doing wrong. I've always done better when I can see myself and know what I need to improve on. Once I've done this then I think I will be able to concentrate on drills and techniques to improve my swimming!

Has anyone ever done video study of their swim technique?

Yep.  Unless you see it for yourself on video you would never guess what you actually look like when you swim.  I have seen horror movies that were less horrifying than when I saw myself on film for the first time.

Yiii...this is exactly what I expect to find when I suck it up & have myself filmed in the pool.  When my 8 year old can find flaws in my technique I know it's time...
