Subject: Ligament/Tendon Injuries- How to Prevent
I seem to be suseptable to ligament/tendon injuries. I have at least 4 nagging injuries right now, including a nice crick in my neck that's been bothering me all week. Is there anything I can do or not do to prevent or minimize these injuries? More stretching? Suppliments? Anything? I'm cranky from lack of exercise :-(.

Thanks,

Nan

Stretching would be a good start.  Making yourself more supple will reduce the risk of over-stretching a muscle.

2X on the stretching. Especially after working out in addition to regularly stretching during the week. A foam roller and "the stick" helps with the muscles which in turn helped my tendons and ligaments as well.

I'm also going to toss out the idea of finding a good massage therapist if you haven't already. And going in for more of an "adjustment" massage than a relaxing massage. (I was pretty sore after my last one, but it needed to be done.)

Well they are probably more muscular injuries than tendon/ligament injuries.  Massage is good.  Prevention depends on what is causing the problem to a great deal.  Proper form and shoes help.  Stretching is good.  Strengthiening helps too.  This is a really widely openended question

Actually, the injuries are not muscle injuries, strained muscles, etc but connective tissue injuries. I'm wondering if I'm just more suseptable to these injuries. And why?

Well telling us what these injuries are would be helpful in trying to counsel you.

OK..plantar facisitis....inflammation of the fascia on the bottom of your foot (BTW that is neither a tendon or a ligament)  Usually feels worse in the am or after you ahve been sitting for a long time.  Question is why did you get it?  New shoes? old shoes?  Increased mileage too quickly? New training pattern?  Or sometimes you geti t for no reason it all.  Treatment is stretch stretch and then stretch some more.  A night splint often helps.  Heel cups or heel cushions also help.

Tennis elbow is also called lateral epicondylitis.  This is a tendinitis.  Once again how did it happen?

The neck same thing.  How when where what.

With all the over use injuries I would have to ask if you were increasing your training too quickly perhaps?  SOmetimes training errors or bad form can be at the root of these types of things.  If say the neck and elbow for instance are realted to swimming I may suggest getting a swim coach to look at your form.  get treated for all the problems and try to figure out WHY they occured so they do not happen again.  Hoep this helps
