So, I have just been told that it seems that I have a swollen plica band in my knee and they want to go in and remove it. Anyone have this done before?? I'm so devestated. There goes the rest of my Tri season this year.

Well really I can get most of my plica patients better without surgery.  PT, bracing and NSAIDs can usually make most people better......If it weere me I would ask to try those things first.  If they refuse and just want to operate get another opinion.

I'm having sharp pains in the inner section of my knee as well as some kneecap pain while running. The frustrating thing is this only happens while running. He doesn't believe PT will help, because he knows I want to run long term and believes the plica band should be removed. I have already done lots and lots of icing and Ibuprofen pretty regularly, and the swelling has gone down a bit, but still have the pain while running.
It's not that the dr is refusing anything, but he said why go through PT for 6-12 weeks only to have to come back at that point for surgery and be out for at least another 6 -8 weeks for recovery. He knows that I am very active and eager to continue working my butt off! Right now, I'm at the point where I can't run

IMHO jumping in and doing surgery on this would be pretty aggressive.  I treat a lot of athletes.  I sent you a  PM

In 1986, I had my right knee scoped due to chronic pain that was getting further aggravated by playing racquetball.

The DR later told me he removed the largest Plica he had ever seen. He described it as scar tissue built up around the membrane in the knee.

I was pretty sore afterwards. I'm not sure if the current surgery is different than what I experienced over 20 years ago (probably). The Dr said he basically shaved some of the scar tissue away.

Even though I was tender, I was up and running again almost back to normal within 6 weeks.

Good luck with your knee. Defintely explore all options before making any decisions.

Danny
