Not to sound stupid, but I am in need of some advice on nose clips for swimming. After each swim I have terrible issues with sinuses which then causes problems with ears. I only have these issues after swimming. I take a Claritin each day.

I thought about nose clips after seeing someone else wearing them today. I never had a chance to ask the guy about why he wears them. He left before I was done swimming.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

A lot of people wear them because of sinus issues. I wear them more because, when I was first learning to breath in freestyle, they helped me a lot. Now I don't like them, but I'm more depended on them. I have to relearn how to do the breathing without them.

How did they help you with breathing while swimming? Very interesting

Are you looking to use a nose clip? I use a nose clip because I can't stand the water going up to my head. It creates an "ice cream" headache for me. I really have never swam without to be honest.   Have you thought about ear plugs too?

I had the same problem with my sinuses and the nose clips have helped tremendously. I don't like wearing them but I rather put up with them on the swim than lose sleep at night because I can't breathe.

I don't wear them in races though as I am more comfortable swimming without them. I wear them strictly because of the sinus issue.

I'm not sure. I just a) hated the sensation of water up my nose b) felt like I couldn't control my breathing well enough to avoid getting water up the nose.

I want to do away with them soon because I don't like "needing" them in order to feel comfortable while swimming. What if I forget them? What if they fall off? But now I have to reteach myself how to coordinating my breathing and not get water up my nose. I also get sinus headaches pretty easily though, so that might become a problem when I stop using the nose clip.

I wear them. Of course, I look like a total DORK! But that's ok! I'm a mouth breather, so breathing through my nose while swimming is really ackward for me. I'm not that great of a swimmer, so maybe someday I can ditch the nose plugs!

I have terrible sinus problems too after swimming in lakes.  I started taking generic Claritin and using nose clips.  I can swim all winter long in a pool just fine but after my first OWS swim, even pool swimming can cause problems.  It starts about 4-6 hours after I swim with some sneezing and congestion and by the evening I can have both sinuses completely blocked.  Totally SUCKS! or I should say DRIPS!  I had some problems after my race this weekend cause I forgot to put the nose clip on when I first started my swim warmup.  I maybe swam 50 yds before I remembered and I paid the price.

Someone suggested I try a nasal flush after the swim or race.  Anyone with this type of problem have success with this remedy?
